Under the Knife: A History of Surgery in 28 Remarkable Operations
Under the Knife: A History of Surgery in 28 Remarkable Operations | Arnold Van De Laar
3 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
Surgeon Arnold Van de Laar uses his own experience and expertise to tell this engrossing history of surgery through 28 famous operations - from Louis XIV to JFK, and from Einstein to Houdini. From the story of the desperate man from seventeenth-century Amsterdam who grimly cut a stone out of his own bladder to Bob Marley's deadly toe, Under the Knife offers a wealth of fascinating and unforgettable insights into medicine and history via the operating room. What happens during an operation? How does the human body respond to being attacked by a knife, a bacterium, a cancer cell or a bullet? And, as medical advances continuously push the boundaries of what medicine can cure, what are the limits of surgery? From the dark centuries of bloodletting and of amputations without anaesthetic to today's sterile, high-tech operating rooms, Under the Knife is both a rich cultural history, and a modern anatomy class for us all.

Mehso-so

Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was an interesting look at the history of surgery. Each chapter focused on a particular surgical procedure, with a famous example grounding the chapter. However, the author often forgot the narrative grounding, which made the text disjointed and jarring. Not bad, but wouldn‘t read again. Not my favorite ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley Book 31/30 for #bfcr2

I read a copy of this book from NetGalley (thank you St Martin‘s Press!). I definitely learned a lot from this book—I have no medical background except what I have learned as a mom 🤣. I had issues with the ARC itself though—there was no ToC, no hyphens, and most numbers after the page shown above displayed as rectangles. These things all affected my ability to read this confidently. (Continued in comments)

DreesReads Though these operations are certainly remarkable, I felt the writing was a little too sensational for my taste. I don‘t need to be shocked by amputation stories and whatnot. I also found the last chapter—on fictional doctors of books and movies—to be silly and out of place. Overall, meh. #surgery #nonfiction #medical #netgalley 6y
