Bobcat and Other Stories
Bobcat and Other Stories | Rebecca Lee
15 posts | 18 read | 30 to read
At turns heartbreaking and wise, tender and wry, Bobcat and Other Stories establishes Rebecca Lee as one of the most powerful and original voices in contemporary fiction. A university student on her summer abroad is offered the unusual task of arranging a friend's marriage. Secret infidelities and one guest's dubious bobcat-related injury propel a Manhattan dinner party to its unexpected conclusion. Students at an elite architecture retreat seek the wisdom of their revered mentor but end up learning more about themselves and one another than about their shared craft. In these acutely observed and scaldingly honest stories Lee gives us characters who are complex and flawed, cracking open their fragile beliefs and exposing the paradoxes that lie within their romantic and intellectual pursuits. Whether they're in the countryside of the American Midwest, on a dusty prairie road in Saskatchewan, or among the skyscrapers and voluptuous hills of Hong Kong, the terrain is never as difficult to navigate as their own histories and desires.

I was torn between a 3 and a 4 star review of this one on Goodreads. How I long for a 3 and a half! 3 is my standard. 3 means this book was good; it didn‘t wow me, but I didn‘t resent the time it took to read it. 4 stars means it wowed me. It had something above and beyond the usual fare. This one almost wowed me.

The new to me author delivers in this book a cohesive collection of stories. Some themes repeat itself, but vary enough to feel like you read something new each time.

I really enjoyed this collection. Many of the stories investigate the dynamics between men and women and feature highly-educated characters. The fluid prose illuminates Lee's narration, sometimes humorous and often insightful. Additionally, the quality of the stories is very consistent--no duds.

This is the second book in the parcel of fabulous tomes @saresmoore sent to me. I made the 'sorry-not-sorry' mistake of commenting on her review of this collection of short stories, saying that I really wanted to read it soon, and darned if she didn't send it to me all the way here in Tokyo! ❤️❤️❤️

batsy That wonderful @saresmoore, spreading bookish joy 💞 7y
saresmoore @batsy It took about one fifth of the time for these to arrive by way of U.S. Postal Service to Japan as it did for the order from Book Depository to get to you! #liveandlearn 7y
batsy @saresmoore When Shawn sent a book to me from Tokyo it also got here really fast. Mine took slightly longer to get there but was also faster than I expected. Book Depo orders always take a long time for reasons I haven't figured out. #postalconundrums 7y

rubyslippersreads Love the cover, as long as nobody actually eats a bobcat. 😹 7y

Rebecca Lee's beautiful language & careful intention leave the reader of this collection with just a hint of uncertainty. Each story circumnavigates one romantic relationship or another, but glides effortlessly into the realm of enduring truth. I am tempted to rate this for what it's not—I think it lacked an "extrahetero" perspective—but the fluidity of the storytelling made it feel unhindered, even by character gender. Bottom line: I loved this.

shawnmooney So, obviously, this is what I'm reading next, hey? 😘 8y

saresmoore @Suet624 This is a collection I think you would enjoy, too! 8y
Suet624 Stacked. Love the review. 💕💕💕 8y
RohitSawant Terrific review! 7y
saresmoore @rohit-sawant Thank you! Short story collections are tough to sum up in 451 characters. These stories were all really good, though! 7y
RohitSawant @saresmoore That‘s so true about it being hard to sum up collections within the character limit. Quite intrigued by your review, and hope to check it out soon! 7y

I want this chair.

Also, this story collection is fabulous.

vivastory "One of the lesser chairs" haha 8y
saresmoore @vivastory I think a specially designed reading chair could be extremely marketable. My house is chock-full of "lesser chairs". 8y
vivastory @saresmoore I am extremely selective about my reading chairs. There's only one chair at my apartment that I can read in 8y

saresmoore @vivastory I think I'm going to have to invest in one soon. And that may require shopping for furniture somewhere other than IKEA. 😱 8y
vivastory @saresmoore Do you shop in the actual bricks & mortar store or online? 8y
saresmoore @vivastory The actual store. I don't go much anymore, but when I was acquiring couches and desks and such, I made several trips. 8y
vivastory @saresmoore I've never been inside the actual store. They opened a location in kc a few years & it got a ton of attention 8y
saresmoore @vivastory It goes against almost everything I believe in. If you end up going, be sure to ask yourself, "Does this dinette set define me?" 8y
vivastory @saresmoore Haha that will definitely come to mind, along with 8y

Each story in Bobcat is both a long poem and a mini-novel. I reread it for comfort and to marvel at what language can do when Rebecca Lee is in charge. It is pure beauty; there is nothing else like it. --Olivia L., main floor.

I planned to read the first story and then continue on with my day. But I couldn't put it down and ended up reading the whole thing this morning. Unexpected stories and wonderfully written.
