Just wow! Emily Dickinson was such a poetic genius! The fact that she wrote most of her poetry for herself and for her friends, and not for publication is incredible.

Prior to reading this book, I had only read a small handful of Dickinson‘s poems and enjoyed them, so I was eager to delve more into her poetry.

Taking a poetry break #24in48

Aimeesue I went to UMASS Amherst, and Emily D's house is literally right down the street. She was always a favorite, but there's just something about seeing the place where she lived. *Sigh* 7y

Something about the tone of Dickinson‘s poems has always bothered me but I thought I would give her another shot. This is the first poem in the collection that I have liked.

That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all

"I felt a Funeral, in my Brain,
And Mourners to and fro
Kept treading - treading - till it seemed
That Sense was breaking through -
And when they all were seated,
A Service, like a Drum -
Kept beating - beating - till I thought
My mind was going numb -
