This story focusses on a "domestique", one of the workhorses of professional road cycling who make it possible for the stars to do what they do. Having been a dedicated follower of the Tour de France for many years and the Tour Down Under since its inception, I loved being taken into the heart of the peloton, onto the team bus and getting a glimpse of the minutiae of the life. Equally interesting was the exploration of the bigger questions of ?

CarolynM 🖕what it is that drives elite athletes, the pressures of professionalism and how far the athletes and their teams will go for success. 5y

Finished another book for 2019! I'll count this toward the #popsugarchallenge in the #debutnovel category. I liked the author's commentary on what it means to be successful and how far one will go to obtain success. If you have to sell your soul to be successful, what do you have left to offer in the end? At what point are we no longer ambitious and instead foolish? Overall, the pace was slow but it felt right for the plotline ⭐⭐⭐⭐

TheNerdyProfessor And, I learned a lot about the sport of professional biking! There was so much I did not know about the Tour de France. I really enjoyed that aspect of the book! 6y

Happy Friday!

1. So many pets: 🐶😸😽😻. A shy golden retriever (Riley Dog) and three frisky cats (Cooper, Daphne, & Leo). All the kitties were rescued and I could just talk about them all day.

2. Grading, writing, and preparing lectures 🙈

3. I love to run! But mostly, I just like to read.

4. Yosemite National Park, Acadia National Park, and Denver

5. What is your favorite type of candy?

@howjessreads #friyayintro

Suzze I wish I could have more pets. I really want a dog but I‘m not sure I can afford one. My favorite candy is Peppermint Patties. 6y

TheNerdyProfessor @Suzze I had never had a dog before and agreed to get one as a relationship compromise. Now I cannot live without her. But they are so much more work (and more money) than a cat. 6y
TheNerdyProfessor @CouronneDhiver I have never heard of such a thing but feel I just Google and buy them immediately 😲 6y
CouronneDhiver Hahahaha! Everyone says that. I wonder if they‘re a 🇨🇦 thing? Sooo yummy 😋 6y

I don‘t think I can adequately convey how little I care about the topic of this book—and how much I loved it regardless. There are so many sharp metaphors about ambition, purpose and meaning. Each character clings to an illusion of control, a conviction that they‘re doing what‘s right for the greater good. There‘s nothing more existentially distressing than the shattering of such illusions, and Reed conveys this with tragic humor and heart.
