We Are All Shipwrecks: A Memoir | Kelly Grey Carlisle

AS SEEN ON DR. OZ "Moving and complex, this is an exquisitely written tale of perseverance and unconditional love. A worthwhile addition to any collection."Library Journal, STARRED Review A mother's murder. Her daughter's redemption. And the complicated past that belongs to them both. Kelly always knew her family was different. She knew that most children didn't live with their grandparents and that their grandparents didn't own porn stores. Her classmates didn't sleep on a boat in the L.A. harbor, and she knew their next-door neighbors probably weren't drug addicts and johns. She knew that most of her classmates knew more about their moms than their cause of death. What Kelly didn't know was if she would become part of the dysfunction that surrounded her. Would she end up selling adult videos and sinking into the depths of harbor life, or would she escape to live her own story somewhere else? As an adult, Kelly decides to discover how the place where she came from defined the person she ultimately became. To do this, she goes back to the beginningto a mother she never knew, a thirty-year-old cold case, and two of Los Angeles's most notorious murderers. We Are All Shipwrecks is Kelly's story of redemption from tragedy, told with a tenderness toward her family that makes it as much about preserving the strings that anchor her as it is about breaking free.

Kelly Grey Carlisle is a gifted storyteller and she has quite a story to tell. At 3 weeks old, a detective finds her asleep in a draw of a seedy West Hollywood motel. Her mother has been strangled to death. What follows are her years being raised by her unconventional grandparents and the path to discovering who caused her mother‘s death. A story about redemption & recovery.

An incredibly difficult book to read. It was very well written but has such graphic content...real...raw...challenging what family looks like and how the village that raised you is not one size fits all. What a story of overcoming and pressing through some very tough family dynamics. Amazing how the author has gained perspective and wrestled with who she is and where she's come from.

I wasn't crazy about this one. Which is sad bc the blurb sounds right up my alley. Most of the book is spent talking about her terrible childhood. When it got to her adult life and addressed her quest to find out more about her parents, I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, that wasn't until the last few chapters.

I enjoyed this memoir a lot. I laughed and cried. Basically its a story of a woman who's mother gets murdered when she is a baby and grows up with her grandfather on a boat. The end was great but sad we dont know what happened to her father. 4 stars.

I LOVED reading this memoir. I met Kelly a couple of weeks ago at the Southern Voices festival here in Hoover, Al, and I got to hear her speak as well. She‘s an amazing person—articulate, intelligent and lovely. She made me cry and so did her story. And she finally got to see a photo of her mom as an adult and she looks just like her. ❤️ Some people have so many obstacles to overcome and do so with grace and love and Kelly is one of those people.

DebinHawaii Great review. The book sounds like a good and powerful read. Stacking. 📚 7y
KikiLovesBooks @DebinHawaii Kelly even has some ties to Hawaii. It‘s a great read, I hope you read it. And thanks! 7y

Been there done that. Usually when I'm mourning the ending of a great book, or when I start to overthink and realize that there are so many great #books out there that I won't get to read because I'm not immortal. Damn you lifespan!
