The Letters of Sylvia Plath
The Letters of Sylvia Plath | Sylvia Plath
12 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
"A scintillating and poignant autobiography in letters. . . . Her letters blaze with fresh and stunning revelations, with more to come."Booklist on The Letters of Sylvia Plath Vol 1 The second volume in the definitive, complete collection of the letters of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Sylvia Plath, from the early years of her marriage to Ted Hughes to the final days leading to her suicide in 1963, many never before seen. One of the most talented and beloved poets, Sylvia Plath continues to fascinate and inspire the modern literary imagination. The tragedy of her untimely death at age thirty, almost fifty-five years ago, has left much unknown about her creative and personal life. In this remarkable second volume of the iconic poet and writers collected letters, the full range of Plaths ambitions, talents, fears, and perspective is made visible through her own powerful words. As engaging as they are revealing, these remarkable letters cover the years from 1957 to 1963. They detail the last six tumultuous and prolific years of her life, covering her marriage to Ted Hughes, the births of her children Frieda and Nicholas, her early success, including the publication of the classic The Bell Jar, and her ongoing struggle with depression. The first compendium of its kind to include all of Plaths letters from this period, The Letters of Sylvia Plath Volume 2 offers an intimate portrait of the writing life and mind of one of the most celebrated poets in literary history.

It‘s taken me the better part of a year to read this, but I am glad I waited until I was in a good headspace. Reading her final letters was still devastating. Now that I have spent a fair amount of time reading both volumes, I can say that no other writer reflects my thoughts as well as Sylvia. To read her letters is to affirm her existence as more than “the patron saint of weird literary girls.”

I think I‘m finally in the right headspace to read this. Plus I‘ve got tons of time, so a 1,000+ page book will keep me plenty occupied.

TrishB Not seen that cover before 👍🏻 5y

And I still love you Sylvia 🤷‍♀️😁
I do cringe sometimes at some of her letters- especially as some of the people involved would have still been alive when these were first published. They weren‘t actually written to be published. But I‘m still reading.

Don‘t know if you saw this tacky (to put it mildly) Glamour article about Sylvia Plath. 😦

Weaponxgirl The oven! 🤭 omg that‘s horrible 6y
MidnightBookGirl What the actual f**k? 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego An oven?! Really? 6y

Itchyfeetreader I believe this was a mock article from Vice about six years ago .. still in terrible taste 6y
rubyslippersreads @Itchyfeetreader I just found an article about it on Jezebel. It was part of a whole “fashion spread” of female author suicides. And so tasteless that Vice took it down. I don‘t know if the person who posted it on Twitter this morning knew its provenance or not. 😒 (edited) 6y
Itchyfeetreader @rubyslippersreads thanks for the Jezebel link. I vaguely remember this from when it was originally published but in the intervening time had convinced myself it was a tasteless mock of fashion spreads vs an actual straight up article. Although on reflection I should stress I don‘t think either intent is appropriate. 6y
heikemarie That‘s horrifying. 6y
Eggs Poor judgment 6y
mrp27 Not cool 6y
Weaponxgirl @rubyslippersreads ffs, yes some women who committed suicide had amazing style but let not link that to suicide please?! How could anyone think it‘s a good idea to do a series like that. It reminds me of being a depressed teen and suicide seemed almost glamorous and this sort of stuff did not help my mental state at all. 6y
batsy Damn. I'm not surprised to hear that it's from Vice. I feel like their attempt at satire is always gross privileged humour :( 6y
DivineDiana A disappointment. 🙁 6y

Unbookish post....If you don‘t watch The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, you must! It is smart and hilarious. One funny bookish moment this season is when a woman listening to Mrs. Maisel deliver an impromptu comedy set gives her a business card for a psychiatrist saying, “He‘s done wonders for my friend Sylvia Plath.”
NOT a ringing endorsement, actually!

That-Bookish-Hiker I love this show! I‘m so happy season 2 is finally out. 😍😍😍 6y
whatsthEStorey @That-Bookish-Hiker me too! I‘m trying not to binge the entire season this weekend! 6y

One day, "cowlike & cabbagey" after Frieda's birth, Plath went downtown & "bought three 2-yard lengths of material":
"One bright Red Viyella (at $1.50 a yard), one bright blue linen, & one soft Wedgwood blue flannel with stylized white little flowers on it (both about 50 cents a yard). I also got a dress pattern & nightgown pattern (Simplicity). I am awfully proud of making clothes for little Frieda."

TrishB Thanks for posting 👍🏻 I am getting myself ready for reading the second volume of letters as I had anticipated a level of sadness. We will never know the full story. 6y
Aimeesue I had no idea that Plath was a sewer. Um, that she SEWED. And I'm a bit jealous that she got that flannel for 50¢ a yard. "Sewer" is going to amuse me all day now. ? 6y
Tanisha_A @TrishB I have read The Bell Jar (plus a few poems here and there; now properly reading Ariel), and it certainly was enough to make me want to read her more. I still have to buy copies of the volumes of letters. Alas, yes! We will never know the full story! 💔 Looking forward to your upcoming posts on Plath! 6y
Tanisha_A @Aimeesue I had no idea either. Hahaha, I like that! Think I am amused too! 😄 6y
