Landwhale: On Turning Insults Into Nicknames, Why Body Image Is Hard, and How Diets Can Kiss My Ass | Jes Baker
20 posts | 17 read | 33 to read
By the author of Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls and a heroine of the body image movement, an intimate, gutsy memoir about being a fat woman Jes Baker burst onto the body positivity scene when she created her own ads mocking Abercrombie & Fitch for discriminating against all body types--a move that landed her on the Today Show and garnered a loyal following for her raw, honest, and attitude-filled blog missives. Building on the manifesta power of Things, this memoir goes deeply into Jes's inner life, from growing up a fat girl to dating while fat. With material that will have readers laughing and crying along with Jes's experience, this new book is a natural fit with her irreverent, open-book style. A deeply personal take, Landwhale is a glimpse at life as a fat woman today, but it's also a reflection of the unforgiving ways our culture still treats fatness, all with Jes's biting voice as the guide.

This is a collection of essays. There are some pretty interesting ones here, and some funny ones. But the last few essays were a bit of a let down. I kept thinking I was reading the last one, and then there was another. And they weren't funny, just tedious. I enjoyed this book when Jes was talking about her life, the good and the bad. But when she jumped on her political soap box, she lost me.

I have obsessed about my weight for over 30 years. It is exhausting. I am, very slowly, moving away from wanting to be “skinny”, and trying to embrace being healthy. I chose to read this at just the right time. Landwhale celebrates a body positive movement, but also acknowledges the downsides and frustrations of this approach. While it could have been 30 pages shorter, I am glad I read it.

#Jes Baker is as real as it gets- heartbreakingly honest, wise and laugh out loud funny. She‘d be one of my five at the table should I be given an opportunity a la The Dinner List.

This book is very unique. It is neither a memoir or self help book but rather like a discussion. There were some chapters that I did not identify with but appreciated the perspective. I loved the last few chapters. My favourite quote from this book was "confidence and reslielancy when it comes to accepting your bod have nothing to do.with yoir body at all."

Rudis I‘m glad you enjoyed it!! 6y

Book I recommend most often: depends on who am I chatting with but The Glass Castle by Jeanette Wall is a fav.
I do not read horror - I am a wimp.
I have 3 cats - Alex, Gus and Willie Nelson
I have no idea in regard to my cities population - small.

I am finding this book to be life changing. I do not say that lightly or often. If you‘ve ever felt like you dare not take up space in this world and wish you didn‘t feel that way... then this book will move you to tears and make you feel like you can triumph with grace and humor and with your heart still intact. #Landwhale #JesBaker #MilitantBaker #Audible #audiobook

I loved Jes Baker‘s first book, Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls, and the followup was no disappointment. As someone who struggles with her weight, the acceptance of said weight, and the cyclical gain-loss game, this book was a reminder that I am wonderful now. I don‘t have to wait until I reach a certain size or weight to love (liberate) my body. I can do that now. A great addition to body positive books!

Please know that there is no one who knows more about diets that fat people. So yeah, we‘ve thought about it; we‘ve likely done all the diets; stop asking this question.

Snapped the pic at lunch, inhaled the salad at record speed, made it back to work in time for the next round of meetings. Only got ten pages in but progress is progress!
