Heartbroken and hoping for a new start, Abi Howes takes a summer job in rural France at the Chteau Bellevue. The old chteau echoes with voices from the past, and soon Abi finds herself drawn to one remarkable woman's story, a story that could change the course of her summer--and her life. In 1938, Eliane Martin tends beehives in the garden of the beautiful Chteau Bellevue. In its shadow she meets Mathieu Dubosq and falls in love for the first time, daring to hope that a happy future awaits. But France's eastern border is darkening under the clouds of war, and history has other plans for Eliane... When she is separated from Mathieu in the chaos of German occupation, Eliane makes the dangerous decision to join the Resistance and fight for France's liberty. But with no end to the war in sight, her loyalty to Mathieu is severely tested. From the bestselling author of Sea of Memories comes the story of two remarkable women, generations apart, who must use adversity to their advantage and find the resilience deep within.

I don‘t exactly know how I feel about this book. It was a fairly light, quick read, and I enjoyed it, but I felt the present day character‘s backstory was there without a good reason. I gave it 3⭐️

Stavkal74

I know how living in a state of fear creates an inertia. It saps your strength and drains your energy, until you become trapped like a fly in a spider‘s web. The more you struggle, at first, the tighter the silken threads are woven around you, until finally escape becomes impossible.

quote
Stavkal74

‘I think we should promise that we will stay true to ourselves. No matter what happens. No matter how bad things get. We should hold on to that truth.'

quote
Stavkal74

‘You know, Abi, we all bring our own baggage along with us. Perhaps that‘s what we humans have in common – what binds us together.'

Booknerd222 It‘s really good. I‘m enjoying the two different time periods and the two women are different but I like that. 6y

Sweet story, told from the viewpoints of Eliane, a beekeeper in a French village occupied by Germany in the 1940‘s, and Abi, a young widow, staying and working in the same village in the current time. Both learn the strength and courage they hold within themselves in the most difficult circumstances. #netgalley

I fell deeply into the honeyed embrace of this book. Full of war and sadness, it‘s also full of light and love. A beautiful story. I was sad to say goodbye.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable and moving tale.

Beautifully written and vividly told, there's a great sense of time and place. It's all so easy to visualise. The characters are well defined and realistic. I also found the descriptions of the lives of the bees in their hives fascinating and this really added to my enjoyment of the book. A captivating and gripping page turner which I can highly recommend.
