The End of Policing
The End of Policing | Alex S. Vitale
How the police endanger us and why we need to find an alternative Recent years have seen an explosion of protest against police brutality and repressionmost dramatically in Ferguson, Missouri, where longheld grievances erupted in violent demonstrations following the police killing of Michael Brown. Among activists, journalists, and politicians, the conversation about how to respond and improve policing has focused on accountability, diversity, training, and community relations. Unfortunately, these reforms will not produce results, either alone or in combination. The core of the problem must be addressed: the nature of modern policing itself. Broken windows practices, the militarization of law enforcement, and the dramatic expansion of the polices role over the last forty years have created a mandate for officers that must be rolled back. This book attempts to spark public discussion by revealing the tainted origins of modern policing as a tool of social control. It shows how the expansion of police authority is inconsistent with community empowerment, social justiceeven public safety. Drawing on groundbreaking research from across the world, and covering virtually every area in the increasingly broad range of police work, Alex Vitale demonstrates how law enforcement has come to exacerbate the very problems it is supposed to solve. In contrast, there are places where the robust implementation of policing alternativessuch as legalization, restorative justice, and harm reductionhas led to reductions in crime, spending, and injustice. The best solution to bad policing may be an end to policing.

Mehso-so

To my surprise, this doesn‘t lay out a comprehensive vision of a world or country without police. It does go through arguments for policing and tear them down one by one, offering more humane alternatives. I was already familiar with most of the anti-police arguments, but it was good to get more information, though the writing is quite dry. I am no more convinced than I was going in, but I was already pretty convinced.

shanaqui Hmm, I wonder if I'd find it interesting or to much preaching to the choir... 🤔 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @shanaqui It‘s pretty US-centric, though UK policing does come up once or twice. 2y

This is a such an interesting subject. Are police outdated, is there a better system? This book definitely gets you thinking.

While other countries are mentioned this primarily focuses on America however there's a lot here that translates to UK and other countries in my opinion.

Four stars. A great topic however this is non fiction in its driest form which isn't a favourite of mine.

Bookwomble I read an excellent book on this topic, from a UK perspective, which Litsy won't import: Abolishing the Police, edited by Prof. Koshka Duff, who was brutalised by the Metropolitan Police for handing a 'know your rights' card to a black youth who'd been arbitrarily stopped by the police. They fought her legal action, were found guilty of abusing her, and gave one of those non-apology apologies 😠 https://dogsection.org/press/abolishing-the-police/ 2y
Michellesibs Thank you so much for the recommendation @Bookwomble , I'm definitely interested to see this from a UK perspective 😊 2y

I loved this consideration of a lot of different aspects of policing in America, what needs to be changed and how modern policing drives inequality and violence. I really liked the structure of discrete chapters covering separate topics deeply, in a way it felt more like a collection of articles than one book, and it made the structure easy to understand and learn from.

Absolutely required reading for anyone who cares about changing police brutality, racial inequality, and true justice. This book has utterly changed my views on what real reform should look like.

Amidst the current circumstances, the least we can can do to help out in the BLM movement is by educating ourselves.

I supported defunding the police before reading this book, but this clear accounting of the manifold failures of police and punitive systems has amplified that feeling.

this is an excellent (and very relevant) nonfiction overview about the many, many flaws in the U. S.'s current policing system. admittedly I'm already very familiar with the major points Vitale discusses, but he contextualizes much of the information with historical background and specific research examples. this is a strong read even if you're already somewhat knowledgeable about the immediate topics.

i propose as an alternative title: “the police don‘t keep us safe 101.” highly recommend for people who are curious to learn more about police abolition but have hang ups about how safety will be enforced (see: alternative title)

If you are like me and had no idea what people mean by “defund the police”: this is the book the idea is based on. I am currently listening to it and it is eye-opening.
