Women's Influence on Classical Civilization
Women's Influence on Classical Civilization | Fiona McHardy, Eireann Marshall
4 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
Written by an international range of renowned academics, this volume explores how women in antiquity influenced aspects of culture normally though of as male. Looking at politics, economics, science, law and the arts, the contributors examine examples from around the ancient world asking how far traditional definitions of culture describe male spheres of activity, and examining to what extent these spheres were actually created and perpetuated by women. Women's Influence of Classical Civilization provides students with a valuable wider perspective on the roles and influence of women in the societies of the Greek and Roman worlds.

I thoroughly recommend this book.
With topics ranging from Roman Egyptian culture, women in the ancient sciences, and women making political decisions behind the scenes, I enjoyed the whole thing. Often there's an essay that doesn't draw me in, but I loved every essay in this.

My tutor is encouraging me to do a PhD. I've not even finished the first year of my masters yet, and she's encouraging me to do a PhD.
Oh boy.

Starting this and already I'm hooked. It doesn't feel overly preachy, which sometimes can happen in books that have women in Classics as a main topic.

I've said before I tend to not post about my university reading unless it's fiction, but I have realised this is silly. It's still books, still reading, and maybe you're interested in my research. I have decided I'll be posting most, if not all, my university reading from now on with #ClassicsMA so have a post on my TBR.

Graywacke Glad your posting these. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That was silly, because we still want to know if they are good books about their subject or not really. Because let‘s be honest, there are some textbooks I kept from college life and some I was more than happy to sell back. 😉 7y
Andrea4 Woot woot #classicistsoflitsy and yea, books are books! 7y

EllanaRose @Graywacke - Thanks, me too oddly enough. @Riveted_Reader_Melissa - You're not wrong! I won't go back and post reviews, but if I reference a book I've already read then I will. Thankfully I have access to a huge online academic library so no paying for awful text books any more. Yay! @Andrea4 - Woo! I'll use that tag too if I remember! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @EllanaRose That‘s wonderful, you are very lucky to have that resource. I‘m still amazed by how much of a leap online books and ebooks have taken in such a short time. 7y
EllanaRose @Riveted_Reader_Melissa - I am lucky for sure, but without it I wouldn't be able to study. I'm a distance learner, and I'm disabled so getting to physical libraries is a challenge. In just a decade my use of my ereader has gone from weird and technological to almost standard and boring 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @EllanaRose I completely understand, I‘m also disabled and I remember cutting apart the Econ textbook into chapters so I would only have to carry the chapter we were currently working on instead of the whole textbook, because they were so heavy, planning an hour between my classes so I could drive from one end of the campus to the other instead of attempting to walk it. Times have changed, and DEFINITELY for the better! (edited) 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa (Well at least in that area, not in some others 😂) 7y
EllanaRose @Riveted_Reader_Melissa - I've done that too! Not driving, my health makes me a risk, but definitely cut text books up just to be able to read them 7y
