New York Times bestselling author Mary Monroe returns to the 1930s era of her acclaimed novel The Upper Room with a dazzling portrait of two very different couples whose friendship and fast times are no match for shattering betrayal . . . A solid marriage, a thriving business, and the esteem of their close-knit Alabama communityJoyce and Odell Watson have every reason to count their blessings. Their marriage has given well-off Joyce a chance at the family shes always wantedand granted Odell a once-in-a-lifetime shot to escape grinding poverty. But all that respectability and status comes at a cost. Just once, Joyce and Odell want to break loose and taste lifes wild side, without consequences . . . When their new neighbors turn out to be high-steppin bootleggers Milton and Yvonne Hamilton, the Watsons plunge headlong into good times and fast living. For Joyce, Yvonne is someone she can show off toand look down on. And Odell won't introduce crude, unsophisticated Milton to his friendsbut is happy to let Milton ply him with free booze. As much as the Watsons want to get along with their new neighbors, the gradual revelations of Yvonne and Miltons seedy past make them think twice about how much time they spend together. But the Hamiltons wont be dismissed so easily. The Watsons soon find them invading every area of their lives and discovering their long-held secrets. Now, the Watsons must tread carefully to keep the Hamiltons from destroying their perfect world . . .

I‘ve been a long time reader of Ms. Monroe‘s books and this one didn‘t disappoint me. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. Her character‘s seem to be simple but knowing Ms. Monroe she‘s keeps you guessing revealing just enough about each one that draws you in wanting to learn more.

Mehso-so

Meh. Both the main character annoyed the hell out of me and there is no resolution to the story, gotta wait for the sequel.

Final tally for #24in48: a slightly disappointing 8 hours. After a long day working yesterday I just wanted to watch true crime shows (love dogsitting for folks with cable!) and stitch, but at least I made good progress on my project! Still love the readathon concept and plan to be there for the next one! @Andrew65 @TheReadingMermaid

Librarybelle 8 hours is still a good time! 6y
ColleenIsReading @Librarybelle I feel fine about it—it‘s more than I would have read casually since I made a point of listening to audiobooks when I was doing other stuff, plus some good reading sessions. And the promise of taking part was a great motivator to get my work and chores done earlier in the week! My workday yesterday just sort of happened because I felt inspired and it‘s important to take advantage of that. Good weekend overall! 6y

I‘m not sure how to take book seriously when I come across something like this. Seriously, “manly meat” and jism that is too weak? 😂😂😂
