In Love & Trouble
In Love & Trouble: Stories | Alice Walker
10 posts | 7 read | 9 to read
From the bestselling author of The Color Purple comes a powerful collection of stories following women as they bravely seek liberation from painful realities, including the story Everyday Use. Here are stories of women traveling with the weight of broken dreams, with kids in tow, with doubt and regret, with memories of lost loves, with lovers who have their own hard pasts and hard edges. Some from the South, some from the North, some rich and some poor, the characters that inhabit InLove & Trouble all seek a measure of self-fulfillment, even as they struggle with difficult circumstances and limiting social conventions. The stories that make up Alice Walkers debut short fiction collection reflect her tenacious commitment to face brutal and sometimes melancholy truths while also illuminating the ways in which the courageous pursuit of love brings hope to even the most harrowing lives. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Alice Walker including rare photos from the authors personal collection.

Whoa — my heart needs a lift. After Adichie‘s stunningly tragic Purple Hibiscus and then this collection of heart-breaking, amazingly crafted stories from Alice Walker, I reach for some lighter fare. But wow do these women have a gift for putting me in the story and slowly wrenching my heart out.

Book 12 of 2018: I don‘t know what to think of most of these stories 🤷🏽‍♀️ But here are some of my favorite quotes.

“How could such pretty brown fingers write such ugly, deep stuff?”

“That his odor is of ashes while hers is of earth and sun.”

THREE book stores in one block in Juneau! And the library is just a block further. Bought an used copy of Alice Walker's book at Rainy Day Books. Drooled over all the graphic novels. Will make lots of library reserves when I get home.

i'm in need of short doses of Ms Walker's transcendent writing in between chapters of dark fantasy (K Hurley) & brutal fantasy (GRRM).

I loved reading this book so much. The characters are rich and the emotions were raw. Each story was its own complex world, but the whole experience left me full.

"Why don't you look for other things? Like neither Truth nor Beauty, but places in people's lives where things have just slipped a good bit off track?" ~ "That's too vague." ~ "So is Truth. Not to mention Beauty."

I picked up an interesting haul at the local Half Price Books on a recent outing that I'm looking forward to diving into!
