Mockingbird
Mockingbird | Kathryn Erskine
THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER and ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT NOVELS OF OUR TIME FOR YOUNG READERS Caitlin has Asperger's. The world according to her is black and white; anything in between is confusing. Before, when things got confusing, Caitlin went to her older brother, Devon, for help. But Devon was killed in a school shooting, and Caitlin's dad is so distraught that he is just not helpful. Caitlin wants everything to go back to the way things were, but she doesn't know how to do that. Then she comes across the word closure--and she realizes this is what she needs. And in her search for it, Caitlin discovers that the world may not be so black and white after all. "Powerful."--Publishers Weekly "A strong and complex character study."--The Horn Book "Allusions to Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, the portrayal of a whole community's healing process, and the sharp insights into Caitlyn's behavior enhance this fine addition to the recent group of books with narrators with autism and Asbergers."--Booklist

After her brother is killed in a school shooting, Caitlyn and her community struggle to heal. This is a sweet middle-grade novel, but the message was a little too overtly presented for my taste, like an After School Special or a Lifetime Original Movie.

Finished my April #bookspin in record time (for me)!

ImperfectCJ @Crazeedi It's a nasturtium. They grow all on their own all over our back patio. The bees and hummingbirds love them, and my spouse eats the leaves in salad. 5y
Crazeedi @ImperfectCJ ok nasturtium! That's right! Beautiful!! 5y
TheAromaofBooks Great review!! Yeah, sometimes the message in books for younger readers can be a little heavy-handed. And I love nasturtiums!! 5y

This is a great read about a girl named Caitlin. She is a young girl with Asperger‘s syndrome and she is trying to cope with a tragedy that just happened in her family.

KPC Very nice book! I also read it and it definitely gives you a different perspective of Aspergers and if you‘re not familiar with Aspergers it teaches you how to interact with people who are in the spectrum. 6y
Kayladvazquez This looks like a good book. I would love to read it and get to know more about Aspergers before I become a teacher in the school district. I like the link you added giving more information on the author. The link really gave me a sense of understanding on why she wrote the book. 6y
Ivanita08 I heard amazing comments about this book. I didn‘t have the opportunity to read it yet, but it‘s definitely on my to-do list! Great pick. 6y

After a horrible school shooting claims the life of her beloved older brother, Caitlin and her widowed father must learn how to find closure. This doesn't come easy for a young girl with Asperger's, who also struggles to understand other's feelings. I'd highly recommend this for students who have autistic family members.

EclecticBookLover This was a great book! I had to read it for my children's lit class in grad school. It was a very moving story. 7y

1. Reading the tagged and Sense and Sensibility.
2. Our holiday weekend in 🇨🇦 was last weekend. I went for dinner with my girlfriends from high school. (I graduated in 1990.)
3. Steak, portobello mushrooms, corn on the cob.

This Realistic Fiction novel, tells a story about a girl named Caitlin who struggles with the death or her brother in addition to have Asperger's. She is on the search for closure. Have read this for my other LAE course needed for our program..it took me awhile to really get into the book, I'm glad I kept pushing through. This is truly a great book. #UCFWaltersLit

Caitlin (nicknamed ‘Scout‘ by her older brother) has a lot going on in her life: the final years of primary school, no real friends, a single parent home, the recent (sudden and violent) death of her brother to whom she was close and, to top it all, Aspergers. If that seems like a lot... well it‘s because it is. The book was an engaging enough read, but I think that my trying to do everything is did itself a disservice.

This RF book is based off the shooting at Virginia Tech with changes to fit this characters life. The main character has Aspergers and is trying to find closure after her brother has been shot. This book will make you cry and smile at the end and help you have a better understanding of students with disabilities. This would be for 5-8th grade. #ucflae3414su17 https://youtu.be/lxp1LuTdpA4

tfundora Wow this looks like a powerful book! I honestly would really be interested in reading this book. 7y
DrSpalding You introduced me to a new book! This would be very powerful! Please include a URL. What age group do you think this would be appropriate for @Angiepuc ? 7y

read this for my neurodiversity square in the #diversitydecbingo. the protagonist is caitlin, a 10 year old with asperger's.

as this moment illustrates, it is just too damn...neat. a nice attempt by erskine but I don't think I would recommend.

My sister recommended this to me though I've not read it yet. I believe the main character has Asperger's and as a teacher with students who have been diagnosed with it, this interests me greatly. Though I'm not sure I'd say it's a disability - just maybe a different ability. #disabilities #photoadaynov16 @RealLifeReading

Original post on 9/28/16: No idea how this book landed in my hands, but I finished after being glued to my phone and TV all day waiting for news after a school shooting in my district. Told by Caitlyn, a child with Asperger's syndrome, it talks of her search for a literal Closure after her brother is killed in a school shooting. With allusions to TKAMB, the theme of walking in others' shoes resonates. Love. #townvillestrong

Rating: 5/5.

This is a really good book and is definitely one of my faves. Not only did it seem relatable because of my job as a teacher for children with special needs, but also because, it sheds light into Asperger's Syndrome, grief & shooting in school.
