so-soI am a fan of all things Beowulf. I have enjoyed Beowulf in all of his varieties and versions, obviously some more than others. While I enjoyed the dizzying artwork of this graphic novel, I felt much of the story was a bit rushed. I am sure it is a very difficult task to translate Beowulf into a graphic novel fit for mass consumption, but I felt some of the finer points that made Beowulf so interesting to me were missing in this version.
pickViolence is prominent in this #graphicnovel rendition of a classic epic: even panels that show Beowulf eating cherries look gory. A large part of the brutal tale is carried visually, and that part is fine, in fact it is the reason I am calling this a pick, but I would have preferred more poetic language in the passages with text. Yes, it‘s a man-against-monster adventure, but still I want nuance. (Scroll for more of my comments under the title.)
This #graphicnovel has an oversized format which adds even more impact to the art.
I love the story of Beowulf; it has fascinated me since I was still too young to understand either its violence or its glory. This graphic rendition is disturbing, dark, beautifully drawn, and true to the spirit of the original ballad and also showed me new corners and ways of seeing a tale that is as familiar to me as my heartbeat.
So Beowulf is one of my most favorite stories and I saw this graphic novel of it and I had to get it. It is so BEAUTIFUL!!!!
I also made avocado toast for dinner tonight because my boyfriend wanted frozen mac n cheese 😒
