Just the Funny Parts
Just the Funny Parts: And a Few Hard Truths About Sneaking into the Hollywood Boys Club | Nell Scovell
20 posts | 15 read | 24 to read
FOREWORD BY SHERYL SANDBERG Youve almost certainly laughed at Scovells jokesyou just didnt know it until now. Just the Funny Parts is a juicy and scathingly funny insider look at how pop culture gets made. For more than thirty years, writer, producer and director Nell Scovell worked behind the scenes of iconic TV shows, including The Simpsons, Late Night with David Letterman, Murphy Brown, NCIS, The Muppets, and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, which she created and executive produced. In 2009, Scovell gave up her behind-the-scenes status when the David Letterman sex scandal broke. Only the second woman ever to write for his show, Scovell used the moment to publicly call out the lack of gender diversity in late-night TV writers rooms. One of the boys came out hard for all of the girls. Her criticisms fueled a cultural debate. Two years later, Scovell was collaborating with Sheryl Sandberg on speeches and later on Lean In, which resulted in a worldwide movement. Now Scovell is opening up with this fun, honest, and often shocking account. Scovell knows what its like to put words in the mouths of President Barack Obama, Mark Harmon, Candice Bergen, Bob Newhart, Conan OBrien, Alyssa Milano, and Kermit the Frog, among many others. Through her eyes, youll sit in the Simpson writers room stand on the Oscar red carpet pin a tail on Miss Piggybond with Star Treks Leonard Nimoy and experience a Stephen King-like encounter with Stephen King. Just the Funny Parts is a fast-paced account of a nerdy girl from New England who fought her way to the top of the highly-competitive, male-dominated entertainment field. The book delivers invaluable insights into the creative process and tricks for navigating a difficult workplace. It's part memoir, part how-to, and part survival story. Or, as Scovell puts it, Its like Unbroken, but funnier and with slightly less torture.

The words 'Hollywood memoir' don't evoke a wide range of stories, but I'd rather have more like this one. Nell Scovell isn't a household name, but she is a successful TV writer, and she provided a complete account of the unglamorous ups and downs and hard work involved. The most disturbing part was the rampant misogyny- some of it sleazy or power-focused but other examples more subtle, the extent to which women were absent from the writer's room.

Nell Scovell has written for a lot of shows and her experiences were interesting. However, the parts of the book that I found most interesting had nothing to do with Hollywood rather it was her relationship with Sheryl Sandburg and writing for the White House Correspondents Dinner. #bookclubbook

A lot of frank talk about breaking into the boy‘s club of TV comedy writing. I liked the behind the scenes look at how jokes and TV scripts come together. So funny, but also parts were kind of devastating.

This was a "LOL" audiobook, but it also had some powerful messages about woman in entertainment. Nell Scovell is so cool! I didn't know her before, but now I want to follow her writing career. It's always inspiring to hear about though, successful, and funny woman. This book is an easy listen, and I'm so glad this was recommended to me by a fellow Litten!!

Insightful and very funny, also annoying and infuriating. 2018 and women still have to work harder than men for respect, recognition and credit. 4 💥💥💥💥 out of 5

Late #friyayintro.

1. Tagged. Funny but also serious about examining gender bias.

4. Twizzler Nibs (due to some weird travel nostalgia—apparently the hotels we stayed at when I was younger all had the same vending machine supplier).
5. 👍🏼

Ebook is on sale today! Scovell is a friend of some friends, so maybe I'm a little biased, but I think she's very funny.

Powered through this one quickly by listening to it as I mulched and weeded my flowerbeds. The true stories of the author‘s time as a writer on a dozen famous shows are heartbreaking when you realize how her gender made her career an uphill battle. She manages to present them with humor and grace while encouraging others to fight for a better future.

This was a really cool look into writers rooms in Hollywood from the perspective of a woman writer. Fun stories, interesting anecdotes, and insight into the lean in book.

Fantastic. Part a behind-the-scenes look at the entertainment industry from a writer's perspective and part women's empowerment anthem. The audio was really well done even if I thought it was odd the writer didn't narrate it herself. The only part I thought dragged was the very detailed description of her process of writing one episode for the Simpsons.

After DNFing my last puzzle a month or so ago when it was about 80% done, I finally felt the urge to puzzle again. Jane Austen book covers. 😍

Also, as much as I‘m loving “I‘ll Be Gone in the Dark” I needed something lighter so I started the tagged book on audio and it is great!

LoverofLit This puzzle looks amazing! 😍😍 7y

BarbaraJean I had never heard of this book until this past weekend—heard Nell Scovell speak on a panel about memoir at the LA Festival of Books! One of my favorite comments from her was that the worst insult you could give is “I‘m writing a memoir and you‘re not in it.” 😂 7y

MarriedtoMrT @BarbaraJean I swear I heard about this book on Litsy but there was only one other post under the book and it wasn‘t familiar. Wherever I found it, I‘m glad I did. She‘s funny and astute. I bet she would be great to hear speak. The reader for the audio is really good but I‘m surprised she didn‘t read it herself. 7y
