Meet the Figgs. June, the familys matriarch, looks forward to a quiet retirement if only she can get her three adult children to finally, finally, move out of the house. But her dreams are shattered when her son Derek unexpectedly becomes a single father. Now theres a newborn baby at home, and Dereks older siblings are showing no sign of going anywhere either. In the midst of the chaos, Junes husband, Randy, has a shocking revelation. With family life flying fast and furious around her, June finds herself thinking about her parents adoptive and biological. Where did she come from? Will her new grandson be traumatized without his mother? And why in the world are all the kids still at home, anyway? The Figgs combines the quirkiness of Miriam Toews, the startling humour and fierce energy of Heather ONeill, the heart of Little Miss Sunshine and the unruly family dynamics of Jonathan Troppers This Is Where I Leave You into one hilarious, immensely fun novel.

This was a whirlwind! I liked it, but I‘m sure happy to live alone. All that activity was crazy and would drive me insane! I like my quiet life. There was humour mixed in here and there, as well. This is a local author to me, so it‘s always fun to read about places I know in my city.

I‘m so happy this new YA novel by Ali Bryan will be published by Dottir Press - they are a super awesome feminist press in New York and this book is also super awesome ❤️

bookishkai Wow, congrats! Also, that book looks fabulous! 5y
Clare-Dragonfly Oh, that sounds fun! 5y
StaceyKondla Thank you @bookishkris and @Clare-Dragonfly 😊 It is a wonderful book and book one in a planned trilogy. Ali is an awesome writer and I can‘t wait for the book to be released next year 💕 5y

An okay read. A story of a normal family with normal problems, struggling to stay somewhat sane. The best part is it is by an Alberta author and set in Calgary.

I love quirky family stories, but I didn‘t like the writing style here. It didn‘t feel realistic with its timing. For example, the family would sit down for dinner and after three lines of dialogue they would all be done eating. Or a character would go out of the room to do a project and in half a page come back with it completed. I don‘t think it was an intentional choice though. Maybe just amateur writing? I gave up.

Pickpick

Right from the beginning, I realized this book was very different than most books I read. The silliness, quirky humor and hilarity were spot on,
and I enjoyed the tone, the characters, the storylines, and the family relationships and intricacies. I do feel that it was missing something, but I‘m not sure what. Maybe it is more in line with a TV series than a complete novel? A promise of more to come, rather than having a solid ending?

So-So to Pick? It was humorous in many parts and their family is easily identifiable and relatable but 95% of this was straight dialogue. I have issues with those books written in that style. I want more development of character's stories.

I know I'm reading a Netgalley ARC but they're going to fix the word properly to CONTRACTIONS instead of CONTRAPTIONS for giving birth right?? They know that's not the right word right?

Penny_LiteraryHoarders Oh wait. I think they know he's using the wrong word... 🙃 7y

So after finishing Educated, I think I need something a little lighter to read now. The Figgs comes out May 1st. 🇨🇦

This is a novel about a family whose three grown children are still living with them and all the situations that arise. Comical, it also deals with adoption and all that goes with it. I would give it 3 1/2. An easy read, and some laugh out loud moments made for an enjoyable read.

LiteraryinPA Is this adult or YA/MG? It sounds right up my alley! 7y
Samplergal @LiteraryinLititz I don‘t think it‘s YA but certainly some situations are YA with the kids. Single dad, lesbian sister, all told thru the eyes of mom who‘s stressing about all the “failure to launch”. Great little book. I think it‘s out this month. 7y
