Juniper: The Girl Who Was Born Too Soon | Thomas French, Kelley French
14 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 11 to read
A micro-preemie fights for survival in this extraordinary and gorgeously told memoir by her parents, both award-winning journalists. Juniper French was born four months early, at 23 weeks' gestation. She weighed 1 pound, 4 ounces, and her twiggy body was the length of a Barbie doll. Her head was smaller than a tennis ball, her skin was nearly translucent, and through her chest you could see her flickering heart. Babies like Juniper, born at the edge of viability, trigger the question: Which is the greater act of love -- to save her, or to let her go? Kelley and Thomas French chose to fight for Juniper's life, and this is their incredible tale. In one exquisite memoir, the authors explore the border between what is possible and what is right. They marvel at the science that conceived and sustained their daughter and the love that made the difference. They probe the bond between a mother and a baby, between a husband and a wife. They trace the journey of their family from its fragile beginning to the miraculous survival of their now thriving daughter.

This book is an incredible story of a baby born at 23 weeks & the roller coaster of life, fight & survival of baby Juniper told through the narrative of her parents. I was able to actually follow this local miracle in real time as I worked with the authors mother and was updated hourly, daily or weekly as baby Juniper progressed or regressed. Reading it years later I still felt the anguish we all felt years ago as the story unfolded. Good read!

tokorowilliamwallace Guess, I should consider this, being a couple weeks premature myself. 2y

10 | #SeptemberDanes

There are so many books that have #Pregnant characters, but including them would be massive spoilers for many. So I won‘t do that! Instead, these books are about babies who were born prematurely before they were ready. Both books are very dear to my heart - my kiddos were premmies 💕

Great at times, but slow at times. I am looking forward to book club discussion.

Is this going to be a crying book? (I'm betting yes.) But will it be a good cry or a bad cry?

Amazing book that not only looked at the medical setbacks of micro preemies but examined the ethical and emotional turmoil associated with making decisions for a baby that is on the cusp of life. I ugly cried more than once and finished this book in two days ❤

SaraFair Don't think I could take this... 8y

So much for my resolution of only buying one book for every four I read. I've read 3 and I just bought 3. These Kindle Deals are killing me!

SuperPunkNinja I'm only counting physical books since my goal is to have fewer stacks of books everywhere! 8y
Lynnsoprano There was a review of Juniper in our newspaper last week. It sounds interesting, but as a mother who lost a premie, I don't think I can bring myself to read it. 8y

Suzze @McShelfington I was thinking about that, as my goal was also less book overflow. I did make a Goodreads shelf "bought in 2017" so I can see how many books I do buy. 8y
Suzze @Lynnsoprano I'm so sorry! I cannot even imagine. 😥 8y
Suzze @SharonGoforth Goody! Let's see if I get to it this century. 🤣 8y
Betty @Suzze Juniper weighed more than Norah Cate (14 oz at birth). BTW, Norah turns two next month! 8y
B.Reader Aren't they great lately?!? 8y
Suzze @Betty Norah Cate was such a miracle. So glad they update the Facebook page so we can watch her grow. 🤘🏻 8y
