Coal Black Mornings | Brett Anderson
6 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
Brett Anderson came from a world impossibly distant from rock star success, and in Coal Black Mornings he traces the journey that took him from a childhood as 'a snotty, sniffy, slightly maudlin sort of boy raised on Salad Cream and milky tea and cheap meat' to becoming founder and lead singer of Suede. Anderson grew up in Hayward's Heath on the grubby fringes of the Home Counties. As a teenager he clashed with his eccentric taxi-driving father (who would parade around their council house dressed as Lawrence of Arabia, air-conducting his favourite composers) and adored his beautiful, artistic mother. He brilliantly evokes the seventies, the suffocating discomfort of a very English kind of poverty and the burning need for escape that it breeds. Anderson charts the shabby romance of creativity as he travelled the tube in search of inspiration, fuelled by Marmite and nicotine, and Suede's rise from rehearsals in bedrooms, squats and pubs. And he catalogues the intense relationships that make and break bands as well as the devastating loss of his mother. Coal Black Mornings is profoundly moving, funny and intense - a book which stands alongside the most emotionally truthful of personal stories.

It may be Gary Numan.....

Great book of Brett‘s pre-fame life. His family, background, growing up and what inspired him to carry in. Finishes just as Suede are about to make it big. He has a lovely writing style.

TrishB @andrew65 👍🏻👍🏻 yay I‘m on leave Thursday /Friday and obviously have the weekend! Monday will be work though so no chance of those figures! 7y
TrishB @Cinfhen only because I wasn‘t in work! Sat in hospital waiting room for 2 hours of it and kids had essays to finish! See what today brings 😁 I think 3 hours would be a norm for a non working day. 7y
Cathythoughts Sansa seems to be getting very comfortable around books ! I wonder why 🤔🙃🙃 7y

Absolutely Brett!! Only UK folks of a certain age will know this feeling. I didn‘t go to the dentist from age 16-46 because of this fear! And only then due to a burst abscess that could have killed me. I still cry now when I have to go and I‘m 50!!

Mitch OMG - me too. I‘ve recently had to go for the first time in years and it wasn‘t pretty! 7y
TrishB @Mitch it‘s not good is it! 7y

minkyb Oh Trish. That story is horrible. 7y
TrishB @minkyb NHS dentists in the 70s/80s were truly awful! They are absolutely fine now and my kids just don‘t understand my fear! Thankfully they‘ve never had it. 7y
arlenefinnigan At least there were NHS dentists in the 70s-80s. Haven't been able to register with one since I moved to Oldham 4 years ago. 😡 7y
TrishB @arlenefinnigan that‘s crap 😔 7y

Great read, and achieves its aim of not being a stereotypical rock star memoir. Brett Anderson's family sound fascinating and he describes them honestly and generously. The language is as flowery and pretentious as you'd hope and it's a great story.
