Is This Guy For Real?
Is This Guy For Real?: The Unbelievable Andy Kaufman | Box Brown
2 posts | 1 to read
Comedian and performer Andy Kaufmans resume was impressivea popular role on the beloved sitcom Taxi, a high-profile stand-up career, and a surprisingly successful stint in professional wrestling. Although he was by all accounts a sensitive and thoughtful person, hes ironically best remembered for his various contemptible personas, which were so committed and so convincing that all but his closest family and friends were completely taken in. Why would someone so gentle-natured and sensitive build an entire career seeking the hatred of his audience? What drives a performer to solicit that reaction? With the same nuance and sympathy with which he approached Andre the Giant in his 2014 biography, graphic novelist Box Brown takes on the complex and often hilarious life of Andy Kaufman.

Is this guy living in reality? He now says the picture in the yearbook is NOT him, but he did attend a dance in blackface as part of a Michael Jackson costume? He says he will not resign. He claims that the photo was part of the “times.” Well, I‘m from Louisiana, and you would never have seen anyone doing this in my high school yearbook (1973-1976), let alone in my grad school yearbook. He has to go...he must resign.

Emilymdxn Amen. What a total joker. How can we live in a world where he can stay employed? 6y
gradcat @Emilymdxn He‘s so tone-deaf...he claims not to have been aware of how hurtful blackface is...I just do not get that! Megyn Kelly lost her job for an idiotic comment about blackface, and she‘s only in television. And in addition, there‘s something else I don‘t get...why are Chicago officials (police, etc.) even suggesting that Jussie Smollett “says...” instead of just saying Jussie Smollett was attacked—it‘s anathema at this point in time. 6y
Gaylagal2 He needs to go like yesterday. Fucking racist and a liar 👊 6y

gradcat @Gaylagal2 Very that!! 6y
sprainedbrain Absolutely disgusting, and it makes him look even worse (just when I thought he couldn‘t possibly look worse) that he feels entitled to keep his job. 🤬 6y
gradcat @sprainedbrain I know...totally agree. What makes me feel bad is that I‘m white...do I even? I feel so inadequate trying to respond to what, for me, is something that I recognized as morally wrong from a very young age. Still, I‘m not black, so do I have the right to express umbrage? Oh well, probably overthinking it...it‘s Saturday after all. But, hey, I‘m right to wonder, right?! 6y
Reggie @gradcat @sprainedbrain so I don‘t think the pictures are good or right but in 6 years it will have been 40 years. I‘m gonna be 40 this year and I can tell you I am not the same person I was in my 20‘s. Prince Harry back in the day went to a Halloween party dressed as a Nazi. Now he‘s married to someone who is biracial. Maybe we should judge him on his actions. Did he ever turn away people of color as a doctor? Did he put policy to undermine 6y
Reggie the health of people of color. Did he go lynch mobbing. Yeah the picture is disgusting and wrong but sometimes people change. Also I feel like this is what the republicans who went back searching for this crap want. Let‘s focus on his actions. 6y
Reggie Sorry if this is out of line. You can delete this if you want and I will still like and stack your book reviews. 😊 6y
sprainedbrain @Reggie I hear what you‘re saying, and I also believe that people can change and prefer to judge people on their current views and actions. The fact that he was able to have a successful career and eventually become governor of Virginia after very publicly displaying casual racism as a 20-something white guy is just evidence of institutionalized racism. I‘m sure he‘s different now and feels terrible, but he never would have gotten this far if he.. 6y
sprainedbrain ...had been called on this inappropriate crap back then or at any point in his career. Yes the republicans dug for it, and yes, I hate to give them what they were wanting, but it‘s not ok that they have people who have benefited from institutionalized racism in power either. Also, I was a small child in the early 80s and I knew that sort of stuff was wrong and hurtful. How did a medical student not understand that? It‘s just icky. 6y
sprainedbrain @gradcat @Reggie sorry to go on a bit... feel free to delete my ramblings, too. I won‘t be offended and still ❤️ you both! 😃 6y
Gaylagal2 @sprainedbrain You have worded this beautiful!❤️ Yes, people can change and be better from a young age. But he needs to OWN his "black face" bullshit and knock off the lying. He's not doing the country and Democratic (I'm a dem?) party any favors. It's time for him to go and it's just a matter of time before he does. And I too love all you guys so much and really appreciate these discussions ? Happy Sunday ? 6y
sprainedbrain @Gaylagal2 That‘s just it... he needs to own it. Happy Sunday to you! 😚 6y
gradcat @Reggie @Gaylagal2 @sprainedbrain None of your comments even approach warranting a delete button...I love hearing the thoughts of others, and I don‘t believe anyone is hurt by our conversation. I respect all of you, and find myself agreeing with most of what you say (esp. about Repubs looking for dirt on Dems), but he does seem to be unaware of some of the most basic facets of what erupts from institutionalized racism. There—I‘m done. ❤️ 6y

Super excited to read this one! One of my favorite memories is seeing Andy Kaufman adding the Mighty Mouse theme song on SNL and being struck, even then, by how weird and hilarious this guy was. #comics #graphicnovels
