The True Believer
The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements | Eric Hoffer
A stevedore on the San Francisco docks in the 1940s, Eric Hoffer wrote philosophical treatises in his spare time while living in the railroad yards. The True Believer -- the first and most famous of his books -- was made into a bestseller when President Eisenhower cited it during one of the earliest television press conferences.Completely relevant and essential for understanding the world today, The True Believer is a visionary, highly provocative look into the mind of the fanatic and a penetrating study of how an individual becomes one.

Who joins mass movements and why? What traits does a typical mass movement leader have? Hoffer didn‘t claim all of his analysis to be irrefutable fact but rather that the conclusions he came to should be thought about and discussed. The book is full of quotable one liners and as well as lengthier insight that one would love to plaster on every lamppost in sight. Highly recommended if you want to understand mass movements.

When an author makes so many generalisations you begin to smell bullshit...I suspect that this is a love it of hate it kind of book in that either you are wholly on board or you go away like me wondering if you agree with the author after all...

#believer My 1st thought was of this groundbreaking book published in 1951.Hoffer was trying to illustrate that no matter if it is a religious ,political, radical,or reactionary mass movement, certain personalities are attracted to and swayed by certain behaviors that can lead to fanaticism. Though published before the advent of hippie cults, Hillary Clinton felt it was relevant enough to recommend it to staff during her campaign. #decdays
