CW: suicide, mental illness
This is a really well written book and a powerful, moving read. It‘s written to the author‘s baby daughter and describes their family life and how it‘s been impacted by his wife‘s mental illness. It‘s deeply personal, to the extent that it feels a bit intrusive. There‘s a detailed and quite graphic reflection on suicide, which is quite tough. A moving but ultimately hopeful reflection on the difficulties & joys of life.

Next up

.Where August and Winter were brief essays on things around the house while he anticipated his daughter's birth, this reads more like a letter to his daughter. While he writes it, he is caring for the children while his wife is absent, for reasons which are somewhat revealed by the end. Aside from that content is his brilliant nature writing, musings on aging, family, and place. #readingenvysummerreading challenge - finish a series

By switching up his formula from the first two books in the series, Knausgaard adds layers of meaning to those installments and lends the series newfound gravity and complexity, making these works feel like a saga that's (possibly?) just about on the same level as his OTHER famous opus.

This read was such a mood. It felt light and easy, mysterious and fascinating. I was never bored.

This one didn't make me cry until the last few pages! The previous book - Winter, was a series of short essays. This is one long chapter with the story almost in sequential order. The paragraph describing himself doing laundry is so detailed, so familiar yet so fascinating to read. I feel a bit voyeuristic reading Karl Ove, uncomfortably close, but we're all voyeurs of a sort, always watching, reading, talking about everyone else.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My favorite installment (so far) in this seasonal quartet. Autumn and Winter were composed of short essays on the world. Spring brings a slight departure in form with a longer narrative structure, but it has a similar feel with all of its details. I loved the longer story and can‘t wait to see what Summer brings. Karl Ove Knausgaard is now one of my all-time favorite writers.

I tried reading this book twice. I made it to page 27 before giving up. This book is confusing. Early on it seems as if the wife is in the house, then it seems as if she's living elsewhere. What really irritated me were the details: there's an incident that causes Child Protection Services to interview the father, but we don't know what happened. There are four children and we aren't told their names, but we know the books on his shelves. Pass.

“... what her eyes begged for was someone to love and care for her, and the loving care she sought for was bottomless. This gnawed at me constantly, and when darkness engulfed your mother, when the pain & the anxiety swept through her like an avalanche & she lay motionless in the sofa or the bed, I began to ignore it, in a kind of hope that some way or other she would realize that only she could drag herself out of it.”

😣

Wow this threw me. The first 2 set me up to expect brief chapters of how the world works. But in under 190 pages Karl Ove does what he does best depicting his day in minuscule detail leading to a reveal. I had to put it down often b/c of utterly beautiful passages & many difficult ones, where he shows us how he “quietly” saved his wife. It's heart-wrenching, balanced out by time spent w/ his kids while his wife is away.

More of a memoir and not a collection of rambling essays like the first two in this series. I hope the fourth one is also a memoir.

Ich liebe Knausgard. Und mit diesem Buch, hat er sich noch mehr in mein Herz geschrieben!
Kaum einer vermag alltägliches in solch Worte zu packen, die einen packen und berühren! Seine Sicht auf die Dinge hat mich auch zum Nachdenken angeregt und immer wieder dachte ich:
"Was ein kluger Mann!"

On a brighter note: I received my preorder for Spring! I‘m so delighted. Looking forward to getting through this in a single sitting this weekend, during some fabulous spring-type weather to compensate for what I‘ve heard is a darker (more honest?) glimpse into Knausgaard‘s psyche.

Btw, the poster says: “I don‘t need therapy, I just need some time alone with my books.”
