Love War Stories
Love War Stories | Ivelisse Rodriguez
4 posts | 1 read | 8 to read
Puerto Rican girls are brought up to want one thing: true love. Yet they are raised by women whose lives are marked by broken promises, grief, and betrayal. While some believe that they'll be the ones to finally make it work, others swear not to repeat cycles of violence. This collection documents how these "love wars" break out across generations as individuals find themselves caught in the crosshairs of romance, expectations, and community.

NEW PODCAST ALERT!

We're speaking with Ivelisse Rodriguez, author of the short story collection Love War Stories. The conversation touches on important topics like double consciousness, why it‘s important to tell Puerto Rican stories beyond the migration narrative, and the dark side of love.

This was described to me as Caribbean gothic, so of course I had to read it.

One of the blurbs on the back reads that this collection "serves up love every which way: thwarted, obsessive, suffered over, delirious. It is sublime."

Written by a Puerto Rican author and published by The Feminist Press. Really looking forward to this one.

vivastory That's quite the blurb! Adding to my TBR! 6y
readordierachel @vivastory Isn't it? It was in the "new & notable" section at my local library. They throw in a lot of small press pubs, which is neat! 6y
vivastory That's fantastic! How are the local libraries overall? 6y

readordierachel @vivastory They're good! A good selection and a lot of community-focused programs. Do you like your local libraries? 6y
readordierachel @Reggie It sounds great, right?? 6y
vivastory Very much so. There's one about a block away & I am in there at least twice a week, if not more. There's a library close to where I work that has a great selection of graphic novels. I'm pretty fortunate because within 20 minutes of my house I have access to 3 separate library systems. Plus they readings & other exhibits. A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to see Shakespeare first folio. That was incredible. 6y
readordierachel @vivastory That's awesome! What would we do without libraries?? 6y
