This is my first Homes, and I will definitely read her again. I love character-driven short stories, and most of these were excellent. The title story captured truths about marital fidelity, religion, and cultural appropriation in just a few dozen pages. She has a huge backlist. Which should I try next?

Billypar I loved May We Be Forgiven. It opens on Thanksgiving dinner and could be described as being about dysfunctional families/ relationships but not in a way I've seen before. The structure is unique too - it's got a lot of strange side plots. 2y

I read Homes‘s story collection The Safety of Objects many moons ago and it really stuck with me. This one took me a couple stories to get into, and I don‘t think it will stick with me in the same way, but I did enjoy it.

I think the problem I had was I could admire the writing, see how clever the author was at creating dynamics and quickly building character but I want to be entertained when I read. I want to loose myself and explore other worlds. This was super well written, the writing was taunt, precise and evocative - but few of the stories touched me emotionally and I guess I'm learning that that is what I need from my reading at the moment. #bookclubpick

This collection of short stories has ties to Homes much earlier collection, THE SAFETY OF OBJECTS. The title story is my favorite, about two academics hooking up at a Genocide(S) conference. I also love some of the shorter, tighter stories like "Be Mine." ?

ReadingEnvy But the two stories with Cheryl, that really seem to give Homes a chance to say what she REALLY feels about Los Angeles, are probably the most memorable. Where people have to wear sunglasses because everyone and everything is too bright. Where nobody is sure who they really are because they've spent so much energy altering their appearance. Where people have to go to foam restaurants while they're still surviving their limited-calorie diets. 7y
ReadingEnvy And it's not that unusual for someone to just... die... because they've been starving themselves. Nobody seems that upset or surprised when this happens.

I read this after listening to an interview with the author on KCRW Bookworm, but her novels are still my favorite. 7y

My book on order for Bookclub came in. Such a perfect cover for our summer read, it oozes heat! Going to see her talk next month too. Even though I‘m know for disliking short stories I‘ve promised my Bookclub pals I‘ll go in with an open mind!

I read A.M. Homes' Safety of Objects in high school and have since bought and read every book she's written. I am so excited she has a new short story collection coming out.
