"When one of his wife Paola's students comes to visit him, with a strange and vague interest in investigating the possibility of a pardon for a crime committed by her grandfather many years ago, Commissario Brunetti thinks little of it, beyond being intrigued and attracted by the girl's intelligence and moral seriousness. But when she is found murdered, clearly stabbed to death, Claudia Leonardo is suddenly no longer simply Paola's student, but Brunetti's case "

Another grand achievement in this series featuring Venice‘s Commissario Brunetti. One of his wife‘s student‘s requests a simple favor that leads to her murder.Another murder, the discovery of an invaluable art collection, buried secrets of Nazi Italian collaborators, the fate of Italian Jews-all are revealed. This novel has me wanting to explore Mussolini‘s treatment of theJewish people,a perfect segue into Our Darkest Night #literarycrew #bookspin #21

#serieslove2023 Brunetti has a calm way of investigating the death of one of his wife‘s students. A young woman tries to seek a pardon for a relative who‘s past is tied to WWII & controversies over artwork sold by desperate people in dire circumstances. Brunetti finds himself asking his father in law about those dark days to help solve the case. Thoughtful police procedural series I am enjoying very much!

Brunetti‘s case in the 11th involves the death of a young woman who has ties to dark secrets about artwork and World War II. There are parts of this book that are so descriptive I could taste the cigarette smoke from a character. Brunetti‘s sense of humor and Leon‘s one-line zingers pop up to counterbalance the darker piece of history that unfolds. Great addition to the series!

Really good. Althoug... the solution is on last 20 pages... And kind of loosely tied to the main story. The fact that it's the w---- .... usually author gives some clues to who is the murderer but not this one. I'm gonna find more of her books. ❤

I‘m reading the Guido Brunetti series for a LibraryThing group read. I really enjoy Leon‘s insight into Italian culture and government. This one was particularly interesting as it dealt mainly with Nazi stolen art in WWII and slightly on the Italian resistance (something more for me to learn about.) There is a solid, fairly well-plotted mystery as well, although the wrong person is punished IMO. Recommended series 4.0⭐️ #2019

Crazeedi I absolutely adore this series! I've read every one and can't wait till another one is out. I may have to reread and I never do that!!💖💖 5y
rretzler @Crazeedi I don't know why I had never read it before. I'm really enjoying it. The first couple I wasn't entirely sure about because there is a different sort of justice in the books sometimes - perhaps reflective of Venetian society? But I like Leon's style and the series has grown on me so I will definitely be reading them all! 5y
Crazeedi @rretzler why i like this series is for the reason you just stated, the book doesn't always end with the bad guy is caught. Definitely an Italian/ Venetian type justice system. I love brunetti's love of food, I love the secretary (her name escapes me this moment) 5y

I‘m definitely enjoying spending the summer reading about people getting murdered in Italy 😂 this series is gripping and has just the right amount of gorgeous food and scenery to make it light as well. Can‘t put these down. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
