Don't Skip Out on Me
Don't Skip Out on Me: A Novel | Willy Vlautin
10 posts | 13 read | 6 to read
From award-winning author Willy Vlautin, comes this moving novel about a young ranch hand who goes on a quest to become a champion boxer to prove his worth. Horace Hopper is a half-Paiute, half-Irish ranch hand who wants to be somebody. Hes spent most of his life on the ranch of his kindly guardians, Mr. and Mrs. Reese, herding sheep alone in the mountains. But while the Reeses treat him like a son, Horace cant shake the shame he feels from being abandoned by his parents. He decides to leave the only loving home hes known to prove his worth by training to become a boxer. Mr. Reese is holding on to a way of life that is no longer sustainable. Hes a seventy-two-year-old rancher with a bad back. Hes not sure how hell keep things going without Horace but he knows the boy must find his own way. Coming down from the mountains of Nevada to the unforgiving desert heat of Tucson, Horace finds a trainer and begins to get fights. His journey to become a champion brings him to boxing rings of Mexico and finally, to the seedy streets of Las Vegas, where Horace learns he cant change who he is or outrun his destiny. Willy Vlautin writes from Americas soul, chronicling the lives of those who are downtrodden and forgotten with profound tenderness. Dont Skip Out on Me is a beautiful, wrenching story about one mans search for identity and belonging that will make you consider those around you differently.

Congratulations on your Litsyversary and 6 digit milestone! 🎉And thank you for your #Thankyou-giveaway. I read lots of great books this year but the tagged book was one that has stuck with me. I am looking forward to Sharon Kay Penman‘s newest The Land Beyond the Sea due out in March.

Willy Vlautin you ripped my heart out and this time you didn‘t put it back. I wasn‘t even sure I was going to read it. It‘s about a young man who wants to be a boxing champion. (I hate boxing!) I won‘t forget this one for a long time.

May was a good reading month for me. 9 books lots of variety and other than The Essex Serpent they were all good.

Jee_HookedOnBookz Kudos to you! 👍🏼👏 6y

It isn‘t often that a book makes me cry these days, but this beautiful one did. Horace Hopper and Mr $ Mrs Reese will be a part of my life for a long time. A novel about having a dream. A story about unrecognized talents. A tale about how love makes a family, even without blood ties.

Author talk and book signing was a great night out. He played songs on his guitar inspired by the book. Line was too long both to buy the book and to get it signed - I'm not a patient person and the bookstore was super crowded. Almost claustrophobic! Fun fact: I live on the same street as the bookstore which is in a gorgeous old house. Too far to walk but a 5 minute drive:)
