Killings at Badger's Drift
Killings at Badger's Drift | Caroline Graham
Badger's Drift is an ideal English village, complete with vicar, bumbling local doctor, and kindly spinster with a nice line in homemade cookies. But when the spinster dies suddenly, her best friend kicks up an unseemly fuss, loud enough to attract the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby. And when Barnaby and his eager-beaver deputy start poking around, they uncover a swamp of ugly scandals and long-suppressed resentments seething below the picture-postcard prettiness.

I love Midsomer Murders and have been dying (no pun intended) to read the book series upon which the TV show is based. It was with great delight that I found them on Audible. This first in the series introduces the reader to DCI Barnaby, who is a bit more taciturn in print than he is on the show. The overall atmosphere is a bit darker than the show, but it works perfectly well. The voice narrator is wonderful, inflecting Barnaby‘s thoughts ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle …with the right amount of feeling and nuance. I‘m looking forward to reading the next in the series! #1987 #19822022 2y

1) Don't make me choose between Poirot (as played by David Suchet) and Inspector Barnaby (as played by John Nettles). Both are firm favourites 💕

2) Fortunately, I'm REALLY BAD at working out whodunit. I love to try to figure it out, but the fun is in being surprised..

3) A new one? Any recommendations, fellow mystery-lovers?

LiteraryinPA I love Poirot and Barnaby too. Have you read Anthony Horowitz before? I like the Magpie Murder series. I also love Sophie Hannah‘s Poirot books that are endorsed by the Christie estate. 3y
RaeLovesToRead @LiteraryinLawrence I have the first of that series on my shelf... have been saving it... but probably should get on with reading it! Not sure how I feel about someone else doing Poirot (although from what I've heard, they are excellent books!) 3y
FlowerFairy I second The Magpie Murders series. 😁 3y

Branwen I am also really bad at figuring out murder mysteries! But I'm okay with that, because I love being surprised! 😁 3y
BookmarkTavern Love, love, love Suchet‘s performances as Poirot! He‘s totally what I picture now when I reread! Thanks for sharing! 3y
RaeLovesToRead @FlowerFairy I look forward to starting them! 😊 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Branwen The amount of times my Mum had said it was really obvious who did it and I've been baffled 😅😅 3y
RaeLovesToRead @ozma.of.oz I can't imagine it any other way! ❤ 3y

Bk3 of June & Bk1 of #14Books14Weeks2021 is done! The 1st in the Mudsomer Murders cosy crime series was very much darker than I was expecting really. Which was awesome. Some of the characters are so different than the tv show, which honestly I should‘ve expected. It‘s well written, engaging & highly enjoyable with a bit of a shocking ending. Which is everything you want in a crime novel. Loved it. #SeriesRead2021 #StackingTheSeries 👇

Currently very much enjoying the 1st book in the Midsomer Murders cozy crime series. I‘m actually surprised by how dark it is, the tv show always seemed a bit fluffy to me. Will definitely be tracking down the rest in the series. How‘s your Saturday night looking where you are?

I‘m a big Midsommer Murders fan. I‘ve binged all 20 seasons twice. I only found out recently that the series was based on books, so I thought I‘d check them out. This is the first book, and I liked it. The book allows more in-depth background information on the characters. Sgt Troy is kind of a jerk in the book, but I love him in the show.

rockpools I had no idea these were based on books! 4y
KathyWheeler @rockpools I didn‘t either and can‘t remember how I found out. 4y

I have a new series to enjoy! This was published in the late 80s and is the first book introducing Inspector Barnaby. The Midsomer Murders tv show was based on this series. I heard about it when my #lmpbc group was discussing possible titles, and since we didn‘t choose this I found it at the library. I liked it a lot! The writing style, the characters, etc. I think there are 6 other books so that‘s exciting! 😁

LeahBergen What a great cover! 4y
veritysalter I love the cover, I really enjoyed these books, much darker than the TV series (which I also love). 4y
BookishMarginalia Stacked! And the kitties are adorable! #catsofLitsy 4y

Quite a fun, tightly plotted mystery to kick off the Inspector Barnaby series - and very little was done to the plot of the book in the adaption to the TV pilot except to bring it up to the mid-90s from the original late 80s setting. I quite like Barnaby in the books, though perhaps not as much as John Nettles‘s performance of the character in the show. I definitely prefer Troy on the show than in the book, he‘s pretty awful in the book.

It‘s snowing. Again. So furniture rehab and Midsomer Murders, it is. Glad my guy doesn‘t mind craftiness in the living room. 😂 AND he built me a warm fire.

@EvieBee84 I'm working on your list, and have a couple of questions!
Do you want mystery series only, or is drama okay too?
A period setting? Or is modern okay?
Are there any things you don't like in a show?
I think that's all I have for now...

EvieBee Sorry I missed this! Modern setting is okay. Has to be set in the UK. I'm such an Anglophile. Drama is good too! 8y
EvieBee Too much violence is a no-no for me. I really enjoyed Luther and The Fall but I had a lot of nightmares. So I can't do those anymore. 8y

Everybody keeps talking about how George R.R. Martin or Erikson obviously wrote this year so we should let J.K. Rowling write 2017. I think Caroline Graham should write next year. She only kills off bastards, assholes and the very deserving. Or the people behind "see Spot run." books should do it. Unless their first book off the presses is "see Spot get hit by a car after eating 17 pounds of chocolate and tainted fish."

mahasoor Pshew just checked and Graham is still kicking around. 8y
mahasoor Wait I changed my mind, a lot of innocently curious people die in her books and I'm one of those people. 8y

1st book with Inspector Barnaby. This is the series Midsomer Murders is based from. I have never read such a wickedly funny mystery novel. Caroline has a decidedly awesome way of describing scenes/characters/dialogue. Not a huge mystery buff but her stuff I couldn't put down.

EvieBee I adored this one too! Scandalous but I was kind of afraid. 8y
mahasoor @EvieBee84 have you read any of the other books? I've never read such witty biting character descriptions! 8y
mahasoor By the way, hello! 8y
EvieBee Hi there! I haven't read the rest in the series. I went out and bought most of them only to find out that the series ends at book 7, right? That was about 5 years ago. I should fix that. 8y
mahasoor That sounds about right, I've only read about six books or so. I'm in Nevada so I don't know if there are more books that just aren't available out here or what, but the tv series is on like season 18 damn near so at least there's stuff to entertain once you're finished with the actual lit. 8y
