The Three Marias
The Three Marias | Rachel De Queiroz
5 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Through this translation of As Trs Marias the literary achievements of Rachel de Queiroz may at last be judged and appreciated by the English-reading public. Since none of her four novels has previously been translated into English, The Three Marias will be, for many non-Brazilians, an introduction to this nationally known South American author whose books have been widely praised for their artistic merits. Her literary works are colored by her projected personality, by an intense feeling for her own people, by an omnipresent social consciousness, and by personal experiences in the arid backlands of her native state of Cear. Basing this story on certain of her own recollections from the nineteen-twenties, Rachel de Queiroz tells of a girl growing up in the seaport town of Fortaleza, in northeastern Brazil. Professor Ellison, whose special field is Brazilian and Spanish-American literature, has captured in his translation the author's graceful style and simplicity of language, and has successfully retained the perspective of an idealistic and gradually maturing girl.

This short book should have been a quick read but the writing is beautiful & lyrical & made me want to savor the story of Maria Augusta (Guta) & her two friends from convent school in Fortaleza, Brazil, Maria Joseph & Maria Gloria-the three Marias. Written in 1939 it tells their stories from girlhood to adulthood & shows the limited avenues open to women in that era. Thanks to #FoodandLit as I likely wouldn‘t have found this one without the nudge.

Butterfinger Thank you for joining and introducing new unknown literature. 4y

Today‘s soup is for #soupersundays and #foodandlit
It‘s a Creamy Brazilian Black Bean Soup or caldinho de feijão from a food blog called Brazilian Kitchen Abroad. I was coveting all the cheese bread I saw everyone eating but couldn‘t find Brazi Bites. I did find a local version that I am not sure how traditional it is. It was good with the soup though. Here with the two books I am trying to finish. Link to recipe below.

Texreader Yummm! I want to try it! Thanks for posting the recipe!! 4y

I finally picked my #FoodandLit book(s) for #Brazil
The tagged book caught my eye on a list of novels from Brazil so I bought the e-book. The other two I‘m getting from the library & hope to work them in but I‘m probably being overly ambitious. I‘m intrigued by Captains of the Sands-likened to a Brazilian Lord of the Flies. For food, I have a few Brazilian(ish) recipes on my blog including one for Passion Fruit Batidas inspired by Woman On Top ⬇️

DebinHawaii ... a 2000 foodie flick set in Brazil that I watched about a decade ago for a food blogging event. I may have to make more of these cocktails. 😋😉That & a Spotify samba/bossa nova playlist I made the other day & I think I‘m set. 🤗 (edited) 4y
rachaich I couldn't get into Ways to Disappear 🙄🙄🙄 4y

I forgot to post a Review about my last 2017 book!
It was a fast read, but not anexo one, written by Brazilian author Rachel de Queiroz.
The book Tell us about 3 friends named Maria, that meet as children in a boarding School. Beside the First name they have in Common tragic family history. The story follow them from childhood to early Adulthood, their loves, sufferings, happyness, losses.
It's bittersweet, and beautifuly written!
