L'educazione sentimentale
L'educazione sentimentale | Gustave Flaubert

Mehso-so

So this book is basically about a guy who always wants something better. He's totally obsessed with a married woman which has some pretty obvious problems. Then every time he makes a different decision, he's too late and the choice is already gone. This gets compared to Madame Bovary a lot. But I didn't like it nearly as much.

Pickpick

Sentimental Education is a coming of age story about a young Frenchman named Frédéric from the country who gets entangled in numerous love affairs and social circles of 1840s Paris. The political turmoil of the age is more of a backdrop than a major story arch, but informs some of the character development. Frédéric is infatuated with a married woman he can never acquire; Flaubert does a nice job with the psychological element of this.

Sat in the car, waiting for the lad to finish playing football in the pouring rain. Good time to start #7 in my ‘100 books to read before you die‘ list.

Pickpick

The young Frédéric goes to Paris in the 1840s to fulfill his dreams about a rich social life with erotic relations. He is drawn to the artdealer Artoux and falls hopelessly in love with his wife. Frédéric is indecisive and in many ways annoying, but Flauberts writing is beautiful and full of psycholigical depth. Not Madame Bovary but still a great book. #1001books

Theaelizabet I've had this on my shelves for such a long time. I have an old translation (Anthony Goldsmith) and every time I pick it up I think, “There's probably a better translation,“ and place it back on the shelf. One day I'll actually take action and move forward. 6y
Henrik_Madsen @Theaelizabet I don‘t know the English translations, but I was happy to read this newish Danish edition. The writing was very fluent and Falubert‘s penchant for detailled descriptions was there without it getting boring. That aside: read it. It‘s a compelling and not too complicated story. 6y
OwlReader Thanks for the follow!! 6y

And the more he was irritated by her basic personality, the more he was drawn to her by a harsh, bestial sensuality, illusions of a moment, which ended in hate.
