The Journal Keeper
The Journal Keeper: A Memoir | Phyllis Theroux
4 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
The Journal Keeper is the openhearted and unflinchingly honest memoir of six years in writer Phyllis Theroux's life. As she ages into her sixties, Theroux uses regular journal entries to reflect on the void left by the passing of her remarkable mother and the thrill of allowing a new source of joy into her life. A natural storyteller, Theroux slips her arm companionably into yours, like an old friend going for a stroll. But Theroux's stride is long and her eye sharp, and she swings easily between subjects that occupy us all: love, loneliness, growing old, financial worries, spiritual growth, and caring for an aging parent. A compelling tale in journal form, The Journal Keeper is a rich feast from the writing life -- with an unexpected twist. After the death of her mother leaves Theroux feeling adrift, she finds the love that she believed was closed to a woman of her age. Not until Theroux sat down to edit her journals for publication did she realize, in her words, "that a hand much larger and more knowing than my own was guiding my life and pen across the page." She makes a good case for this being true for us all.

These are the books we discussed today for #ThePoconoBookClub ???????. Everyone recommended their selections. @Molly_the_mezzo was "Mudbound" and @BookBabe read the tagged book. A smaller turn-out since it was so cold today (4 degrees ?☃️!). Our 2 servers may be joining our book club AND Litsy ?????!

britt_brooke I loved The Paris Wife. 💚 7y
LiteraryinPA That‘s awesome that you recruited the servers. 😋 Way to spread the Litsy love! 7y

#BookNDinner! #SunBasket edition! Tonight‘s delectable delicacy was juicy chicken breast and parsley-pecan pesto with roasted beets and sautéed kale. So yummy! ? This has been another presentation of: #MrBookBookBabeKitchen. Happy reads & happy eats!

Here‘s a link for $25 off if you‘d like to try SunBasket too: https://www.sunbasket.com/invite/Jen375879

Have you tried any meal kit services? What did you think? I‘m on a quest to try them all!?

JSW We have tried several and have liked Chef‘d best. Mr. JSW loves to cook! 7y
Zelma We did Blue Apron for awhile. It was a tad expensive but the ingredient quality was good. I liked some of recipes quite a bit, but thought they relied too much on pan frying and sautéing everything. I like using my oven. 7y

BookBabe @JSW He‘s a good man! 😁👌🏻 Oooh, I forgot about that one! I haven‘t tried Chef‘d yet. Do you have a promo code I can use? 😃 7y
BookBabe @Zelma Yes, I agree. They all seem to be really into pan frying and sautéing. We did Blue Apron for a while too, as well as Plated and Sun Basket. 7y
JSW @BookBabe sadly, we could find no promo code, just some strange set of points that we couldn‘t figure out and don‘t want to burden you with. I‘m afraid you‘re on your own! 😉 7y
Zelma @BookBabe I did get the Plated cookbook and it is much more varied. Plus, they show options for many of the recipes based on seasonal vegetables. Really like it. 7y
