A race-against-time thriller for fans of Tana French and Megan Abbott: to save a missing girl, FBI Agent Elsa Myers may have to lose herself... Even as her father lies dying in a hospital north of New York City, FBI Agent Elsa Myers can't ignore a call for help. A teenage girl has disappeared from Forest Hills, Queens, and during the critical first hours of the case, a series of false leads obscures the fact that she did not go willingly. With each passing hour, as the hunt for Ruby deepens into a search for a man who may have been killing for years, Elsa's carefully compartmentalized world collapses around her. She finds missing people, but she knows too well how it feels to be lost. Everything she has buried--her fraught relationship with her sister and niece, her self-destructive past, her mother's death--threatens to resurface, with devastating consequences. Can our most painful childhood secrets be forgotten? Or will they always find their way back into our adult lives? These questions lie at the heart of A Map of the Dark, a riveting portrait of a woman haunted by her family legacy, and a race-against-time thriller.

This is probably a case of bad timing as I think I really need a break from all things violent and dark. Trigger warnings under a spoiler tag. I have to read the sequel because I got it from NetGalley, but I really don‘t like the MC, so it‘s going to be a struggle. The writing was okay - not terrible, but not memorable, either. If you‘ve got no other options and enjoy procedural thrillers, you‘ll probably enjoy it.

A girl goes missing, bringing together an FBI expert in missing persons cases and a local cop. This is a solid police procedural with enough hints of depth to the two investigators to keep things interesting. I won‘t be running out to find the next book, but I‘d certainly read it if it came my way.

A predictable police procedural featuring a damaged FBI agent (are there any non damaged FBI agents in literature?!) working a missing teenager case. Twists were obvious a mile off but it was just what I needed to read yesterday so a so-so rather than a pan.

I enjoyed this book. It focused equally on the current day crime and the background of the main character. I‘m hoping that this book is the start of a new series. I was drawn in both by the crime at the center of the book and the development of the main character. This was a pick for me.

I found this to be a solid crime read, with a fairly interesting plot. There was a little too much focus on the past for me, and it seemed to slow the urgency of the contemporary case down somewhat. Overall, a good read but doesn‘t break new ground in the genre. Rating: 3/5.

Thanks to Netgalley and publishers, Hodder & Stoughton, for the opportunity to read and review an ARC.

I finished my first book to #UsherInTheNewYear with this missing persons thriller featuring an FBI agent. #ShesGotClaws for sure as she works amongst a lot of her own trauma and issues to solve the case. It‘s out tomorrow officially for those who have counted this as one of their #AnticipatedJanuaryReads. A little predictable but still a solid read! #StartingANewJanuary @writerlibrarian #NUYear @Cinfhen #JanInBooks18 @bookisglee
