Die Herren des Nordens
Die Herren des Nordens | Bernard Cornwell
17 posts | 40 read | 12 to read
(Observer) Ein glnzender dritter Teil. (Publishers Weekly)

This was definitely my favorite so far in the series. I‘m pleased to have Sitrich and Finan in the story finally.

Having been a fan of the show, I must say in reading about the taking down of Kjarten and his son, Sven was much more brutal in the book! I loved it!!! Nothing beats a good revenge story and they did it proper!

These books do differ from the show in many spots but I love them both separately so it all works for me.

I am so loving this series. Having read first book 7, I wanted to start at beginning. I find it interesting watching the relationships, bonds, and stories start and evolve. In particular, I was interested to see Finan introduced, as he was in this book. So good. 4.5/5

This'll be the last book I finish this year. It makes no pretence to great literature, and Uhtred is a bit of a knob (albeit charismatic), but it's a cracking good yarn. Battles, blood, betrayal, a happy ending (we know there's a gazillion more books!): what more do you want? More for the female characters to do, perhaps? (Ugh, patriarchy!)

👈Don't fret, Uhtred: that's just a bookmark from @TrishB . Nothing to frighten the horses. Ask Alfred.

merelybookish Delightful review! Happy New Year! 4y

The misogyny is strong in this one.

It's an OK series, I'm invested in some characters, but not Uhtred. The author seems to show that people are evil if they abuse women and children. Sure you can claim it's historically accurate, but does it really need to be in every other chapter?

Al these books are a great read and really cool to learn about a shield wall

AliCoo I like that his action cannot be beat and yet his history is pretty spot on. 2y

When there‘s 11+ books in a series I no longer care about the edition. #saxonstories

Damn, I like these characters. All of them. I like the story arch. All of it. This is an exciting adventure. An adventure that feels real, as real as fiction can feel without physically zapping me right into its space.
Rating: 4/5 stars. Finished reading 11-24-16

Side note: I have more thoughts regarding this series posted in my review on Goodreads and Instagram -- if you're curious.

LeahBergen Yes!! Only one season so far. It's called The Last Kingdom. 8y
Texreader @LeahBergen Thanks! Have you watched any and what did you think? Looks like it for decent ratings. 8y
LeahBergen @Texreader Yes, I binged the whole season. I wasn't too sure about some of the casting at first but they followed the first book pretty closely (and hey, we can't be THAT picky... there are not enough shows like this out there!😉) 8y
Texreader @LeahBergen thanks so much! I hope it is on Netflix 8y

Steeped in historical fact, Cornwell continues his Saxon Series following the fictional Uhtred through Ninth Century England as Saxons and Danes clash for control of the North Atlantic island, revisiting enemies made in the first book as Uhtred continues his quest to reclaim his lands from the uspurper, his uncle.

MrBook Cornwell's a great author! 8y

A fun read to take you away. Beware, you might lose yourself researching the real history behind it.
