Sagei.9
Yeh-Shen | Ai-Ling Louie

Yeh-Shen has large blocks of text with some more complex vocabulary. For younger children, it would be best to start with a read-aloud to explore vocabulary.

A Cinderella retelling using Chinese folklore. It keeps with the conventions of the Cinderella story we are familiar with, with a few changes (a fish and a fairy god-uncle). The illustrations, rather than the story, are responsible for featuring ancient Chinese culture.

Sagei.9

Her loveliness made her seem a heavenly being, and the king suddenly knew in his heart that he had found his true love.

Yeh-Shen, a TL book, is a Chinese adaptation of the classic story of Cinderella. This book was awarded the Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor. It would be great for a RT. A great resource can be found here UDL 7.2 which is optimize relevance, value and authenticity would work great because you can emphasize the importance of representation in traditional literature. #UCFLAE3414SP20

hadassajl EL 4 which links topic to students prior knowledge applies because you can ask students if they‘ve heard about Cinderella and if so what they know about it. 5y
DrSpalding Readers theater would be a wonderful way to use this particular variant of the classic Cinderella story to expose students to another culture. Books as windows! 5y

#wanderingjune #chinagirl @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB This version of Cinderella is even older than the European versions we know so well. When I was younger I‘d go to the library and try to find all the different versions of Cinderella I could. I still love Fairy Tale Retellings or alternative versions like this one.

Cinfhen I can‘t remember which book I read and this version of Cinderella was referenced. I think it was in the 6y
marleed The cover is beautiful! 6y

Loving these Cinderella stories, but the stepmother stabs a fish and is crushed to death in a shower of flying stones - WOW! Just a little violent.

LiterRohde I use this as one of the versions of Cinderella (as well as a German version - love the student reaction when they cut off their toes and heels - and an Egyptian version) when I teach a lesson comparing them and talking about archetypes. 6y
Tjackson @LiterRohde Getting ready to read Egyptian Cinderella now. What is the title of the German one? I have a Persian one and Mexican one, too! 6y
LiterRohde @Tjackson It‘s just the Brothers Grimm version. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Not much stepmother love there! Holy crow! 6y
