The Silence of the Sea
The Silence of the Sea: A Thriller | Yrsa Sigurdardottir
Winner of the Petrona Award 2015!From the queen of Icelandic crime fiction comes a truly chilling story that will leave readers breathless right up to the memorable ending. This is possibly her best book yet. Bestselling and award-winning Icelandic crime author Yrsa Sigurdardttir has produced here a dazzling display of brilliant crime writing that is both groundbreaking and immensely satisfying. As The Silence of the Sea opens, a luxury yacht crashes into a Reykjavik pier. But the boat is empty; no one is on board. What has happened to the crew? And what has happened to the family who were very much present when the yacht left Lisbon? What should Thora Gudmundsdottir, the series sleuth, make of the rumors that the vessel was cursed? She is spooked even more when she boards the yacht and thinks she sees one of the missing children. Where is Karitas, the glamorous young wife of the yacht's former owner? And whose is the body that has washed up further along the shore? The most chilling novel yet from an international best-selling author at the height of her powers.

I‘ve narrowed down my husband‘s stacks of Icelandic crime novels to this one for #readingeurope2020 for #Iceland. But it will have to get in line as I‘m currently reading Victim 2117 for #Denmark. @Addison_Reads this is my pick! It has a terrible rating here on Litsy but it was a Scandinavian crime novel of the year, so when in Scandinavia (figuratively speaking) I‘m going to read like a Scandinavian.

Addison_Reads I look forward to seeing what you think. 4y
xicanti I couldn‘t make it through this one. Hopefully it‘ll click for you! 4y
rabbitprincess I really liked this one! That might be because I like mysteries involving boats 😁 4y

Casey wanted snuggles while I did a little of the ol‘ flop-n-read on this Easter Monday.

Unfortunately, the book‘s a bust. I‘m bored as of page 50 and my dad, who‘s read it, says I‘m liable to stay that way for a long while then find the ending disappointing.

Oh well. At least I got it off La TBR. #easterextravaganza

xicanti @Andrew65 I subbed another book for this one and I‘m much happier for it. 5y

I started my first Icelandic mystery over breakfast. I wonder how many characters named Thorstein I‘ll encounter? The detective is called Thóra, so that‘s one Thorperson for the tally right off the bat!

(I may have been unduly influenced by THE SAGAS OF ICELANDERS. Never forget the scene where Thorstein goes to visit Thorstein.) #easterextravaganza

Andrew65 Thors everywhere 😂 Be interested to see what you think of this author, not tried them yet. 5y
xicanti @Andrew65 so far, her prose is pretty bland. I‘m hoping the plot draws me in well enough that that doesn‘t matter. 5y
Andrew65 @xicanti 🤞🤞🤞 5y

xicanti @Andrew65 I consulted with my father, who read it before he, and he doesn‘t think it‘s worth finishing. I‘ll give it to the end of the current chapter to hook me, then decide whether I‘ll move on to something else. 5y
Andrew65 @xicanti Oh dear. NordicNoir does seem to be causing some issues on Litsy at the moment. Tried Lars Kepler and Jussi Adler Olsen this year and not overly taken, from those two it needs more pace and tension. (edited) 5y
xicanti @Andrew65 this one was too cinematic to be truly effective. All the dialogue and description was the type of thing that works way better on screen than in print. 5y

"Only" 18 books read in May. But I finally finished The Brothers Karamazov!

Pickpick

I loved this book and thought it was a good place to pause the series (or stop it entirely). It was chilling and heartbreaking, occasionally funny (Thóra has a sly sense of humour), and nerdily interesting for me given that I like books about ships and accident investigation.

It's SPELLED "unmanned luxury yacht", but it's PRONOUNCED "throatwobbler mangrove".

TheKidUpstairs Yes! One of my all time favourite Python sketches. 7y

I finally finished this one. It was ok... Definitely fits in the category of #Nordicnoir. It has some great elements to it, including a whodunnit that I didn't expect. The middle of the book got bogged down with details. I liked the way the author (I'll call her that because there's no way in hell I'm spelling that name out) alternated chapters of the investigation with that of the victims accounts of what"really" happened.

Finally home. Read this on the plane coming home. After visiting Iceland decided I'm going to read some authors from there Sometimes I think a bit gets lost in translation. So maybe didn't enjoy this as much as some people might. If you like slightly gruesome mysteries give it a go.

I don't think of myself as someone who buys a ton of books, but over the last six months or so there've been a lot of charity sales and discount days at the local thrift store, and somehow they've piled up. Today I organized all the ones I had inside my closet and realized there wasn't room for them on my main TBR shelf. Now they're stacked at the foot of my bed so I can't ignore them.

So I used to enter a lot of Goodreads Giveaways but then stopped for a while... recently I've entered a bunch and won these two awesome looking books!!! I'm very excited to jump into both these worlds soon! Thank you to @RiverheadBooks and Minotaur Books (sadly they do not have Litsy) for these #freebies!

Reviewsbylola I haven't won a GR giveaway in almost a year. 😭 8y
Alicia @Reviewsbylola oh no! I must have some crazy luck then...do you enter a lot?? 8y
Reviewsbylola I try to only enter for books I truly want to read but I would say I enter a good amount! 8y

Pickpick

A very enjoyable Icelandic thriller! In the opening chapter, an empty luxury yacht slams into a dock with little clear evidence of what happened to the occupants. The remaining chapters bounce back and forth between the attempts to learn what happened and the events aboard ship. A bit of 10 Little Indians meets The Woman in Cabin 10.

MaleficentBookDragon This sounds interesting. One more to add to my longggggg #tbr list. 8y

Late entry for #readinginbed! I loved seeing everyone's posts on this yesterday. I read in bed every night and always have, even if it's only a paragraph. As a kid, I would hide under the covers with a flashlight so I could read past bedtime. I guess I just never got over that!
