In 1938, Lily Rene Wilhelm, a 14-year-old Jewish girl, is living in Vienna when the Nazis march into Austria. After a ship voyage fraught with danger from Nazi torpedoes, teenage Lily reunites with her parents in New York and helps her family earn a living by painting designs on wooden boxes. One day she sees an ad in the paper: a comics publisher is looking for artists. Lily has never drawn comics before, but teaches herself how they work. She is hired to draw the character Seorita Rio, a beautiful spy fighting the Nazis.

I came across this on Hoopla and since I haven't read a book for #Austria I thought I'd give it a chance. #ReadingEurope2020 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

It's written for a younger audience, and I feel it did an excellent job of introducing young readers to a terrible time in our history. Once I finished it I quickly looked up comics that she had worked on. I always love when a book sends me on a hunt for more information.

BarbaraBB That cover! Love it! 4y
Librarybelle Totally agree - love when I want to learn more about a topic or an author! 4y

I found this on Hoopla. It‘s a quick read that tells the story of Lily and her journey from Austria to England and finally America during WWII. I do feel a lot of her story is left out, but I still think it‘s worth reading and would be an especially good place for children to start to learn more about WWII. I quite loved the illustrations as well. I‘m going to try to get my niece and nephew to read this! 4⭐️

This was an interesting little graphic biography.

I didn‘t get as much reading time for #24b42020 in today as the last two days because I got motivated to take down Christmas and do some purging. Should be back on track tomorrow!

This biography book is a good book because it has many facts and events documented throughout it. I believe it is exciting because it really happened, yet still told in a good and interesting way. The illustrations help make the theme believable and it recognizes various points in Lily's life. It however, is quite short and might not be telling a full story like we would've expected to see from the title and beginning.

This book is fascinating to me and I'm sure older early childhood classrooms could love a book like this. They might of been freshly introduced to the Holocaust or they might just really enjoy good comic/picture books. This book would be fairly easy to read and the illustrations allow them to follow along and not get confused or lost inside the story!

#OctoberXFiles Day 6: Lily escaped Vienna in the 30s & England in the 40s during the time of the Holocaust via Kindertransport. When she was reunited with her parents in the US, she became famous for her comic series Señorita Rio, a Brazilian nightclub entertainer who is actually a counter spy, fighting Nazis in South America, a real #ManEater. Through her comic strips, Lily triumphed over her tragic experiences. My Review https://wp.me/pDlzr-2TJ

A slightly misleading title on a good, well-researched and well-illustrated book.
