A Little History of the World
A Little History of the World | E. H. Gombrich
E. H. Gombrichs bestselling history of the world for young readers tells the story of mankind from the Stone Age to the atomic bomb, focusing not on small detail but on the sweep of human experience, the extent of human achievement, and the depth of its frailty. The product of a generous and humane sensibility, this timeless account makes intelligible the full span of human history. In forty concise chapters, Gombrich tells the story of man from the stone age to the atomic bomb. In between emerges a colorful picture of wars and conquests, grand works of art, and the spread and limitations of science. This is a text dominated not by dates and facts, but by the sweep of mankinds experience across the centuries, a guide to humanitys achievements and an acute witness to its frailties.

“The Night Circus“ is a mesmerizing tale of magic, love, and mystery, set against the backdrop of a magical circus that only appears at night. Jim Dale's narration is nothing short of spectacular; he brings each character to life with his enchanting voice and expert storytelling....

Unquestionably one of my favorite books. This isn't your average academic history book. I felt like Sir Ernst H. Gombrich was this sweet grandfather just telling bedtime stories of our world, its people, and their tales. The author's strong pacifist nature gives us a refreshing unbiased narrative. Its chronological pace is rich and thorough but clear, with a lot of energy and warmth. It will captivate you, and you will not dare put it down.

With all the craziness surrounding the holidays, I'm wayyy behind on the holiday book exchange. To my match: it's coming but it might be a little late. #SecretSantaGoesPostal

Then we happened onto "Judd books". @Amy-Laura spotted the faded 'Books' on their awning. I would have walked past it.
Books up to the ceiling, new but for reduced prices. Amy got some "Little History of..." books but didn't want to get the "Little History of Science", which was sitting on the top shelf.

SusanInTiburon I love a bit of higgledy-piggledy in a bookshop! 7y

I was sold with the flap! I did the unthinkable in the car and immediately read the epilogue first in which Gombrich briefly recounts his own personal history living thru WWII. It reads like frightening commentary on our current political climate. Rinse & Repeat 😑 Nonetheless, as of the revision in 1985, he felt hope for humanity was justified.

I loved this book, but I lent it out and never got it back. People who don't return books are the worst!
