Women Without Men
Women Without Men: A Novel of Modern Iran | Shahrnush Parsipur
12 posts | 14 read | 21 to read
A modern literary masterpiece, Women Without Men creates an evocative and powerfully drawn allegory of life in contemporary Iran. Internationally acclaimed writer Shahrnush Parsipur follows the interwoven destinies of five women including a prostitute, a wealthy middle-aged housewife and a schoolteacher as they arrive by different paths to live together in a garden in Tehran. Shortly after the 1989 publication of Women Without Men in her native Iran, Parsipur was arrested and jailed for her frank and defiant portrayal of women's sexuality.

"Why were you embarrassed by her?" asked Farrokhlaqa, unwilling to leave the subject. "There's no shame in becoming a tree." ?

This novella starts out feeling like linked short stories until the women‘s lives intersect. The magical realism reminded me of Allende or Marquéz but set in Iran in the 1950s. It shows everyday women and their relationships to each other. It‘s really very beautiful. I loved it and will now try to track down more translated works by this amazing woman! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
