When book 1 arrived at my library I had to read it. That cover was just so gripping. Imagine my surprise when the paperback and book 2 came out. The gave book one a subtitle that became the main title and used a different aspect of the artwork inside. Then book 3 appeared with yet a new cover. My guess is to pull in adult fantasy readers who like LoTR, WoT, etc

Book 1 is a chunkster. But 1/3 of that length is the appendix that 👇🏻

LibrarianRyan You need to read as you go along. It helps explain the world building rather than leave holes. I absolutely loved this dark book. It‘s not scary like the original cover suggests, but a grand adventure for true fantasy lovers. YA. #BBRC

ShananigansReads I love the “final” covers. Would definitely pick it up to read the back. 5y
LibrarianRyan @Bookjunkie57 Well let me tell you about them. Its a hard land, not steampunk, but has a bit of steampunk feel, even though most machines are living things, or have living parts. When people kill monsters they tattoo it on their body. This book follows a orphan boy who takes on a dangerous job as a lamp lighter, and learns way more about real monsters then he ever thought possible. 5y

wanderinglynn I‘d be much more likely to pick up the 3 set than either the original or the second set. Same for the renaming. To me, the original title, combined with the cover art, seems to fall more in the horror category, which I shy away from. 5y
ShananigansReads @LibrarianRyan funny enough my library has the first and second covers but not the third. 5y
LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn I was expecting horror when I originally read it. I think the second covers actually go to the series best. It‘s the authors original artwork. (edited) 5y
LibrarianRyan @Bookjunkie57 that was pretty common. Very few libraries seem to have book 3. 5y
wanderinglynn You made me curious, so I‘m going to have to check them out now. 5y

Bailedbailed

Thought about this today and decided I‘m not putting any more time into this book. I read some reviews and apparently the things I didn‘t like continued to be a thing throughout the book. Sooo away the book goes and on to something I‘ll hopefully love

Started this over the weekend but made my first chunk of real progress on it yesterday. So far, I‘m not feeling ensnared or hugely inspired to pick it up and read it. I‘ve read several very strong books this month so this one is suffering by comparison. Beautiful pencil illustrations of characters though. This is off my TBR shelf so whether I stick with it or not, that‘s one more book off the shelf.

Highly recommended fantasy you‘ve never heard of. Wonderful start to a trilogy, beautifully written, with illustrations throughout by the author. Endlessly imaginative. So, so good.

I wish I had a hard cover copy of this book. The hard cover makes it look like the title is #Monster Blood Tattoo (that's the series title). This is the paper back version of book 1 foundling. It's amazing. And 1/4 of the book is glossary. Excellent world building. Loved this one. #marchintooz

GatheringBooks i have the trilogy in my shelves waiting to be read. i‘ve read a lot of rave reviews. 7y

Finally starting this. I was going to read this but I ended up reading quite a few books before it.

LibrarianRyan I loved this book. Be sure to read the foot notes and refer to the glossary. The world building is amazing. 7y
mangokittty @LibrarianRyan I love when books have extra information in them. I actually own this one and read it two or so years ago, but never read any of the others. I saw them at my library and figured I‘d reread it so I can refresh on all the details. It reminds me of another book, but I can‘t remember the title. 7y
LibrarianRyan @mangokittty I have that same problem. When I go finish the series I too will have to re read this. We did it as a book club with my advanced reading kids. It was awesome. 7y
mangokittty @LibrarianRyan I mean who doesn‘t love monsters? 7y

I forgot the book is even illustrated. As I look through and see my notes in the margins, highlighted vocabulary words, etc. it just reminds me of how much I love this book. And now I have an urge to read it again. Fun fact yellow highlighter as virtually disappeared. The blue, pink, and purple pen is still easy to find.

Texreader Excellent artwork! 8y
LibrarianRyan The entire book is this way. And you get so sucked in. 8y

Do you like complicated background fantasy? Then give this a tray. The paper back looks a lot different from the hard cover with emphasizes the series title Monster Blood Tattoo. This is book one and it is large, but almost a 3rd of the book is glossary. It's high fantasy with a semi-steampunk feeling. It is a trilogy but I haven't read the rest. But I want to. I even used this as our long book for the 6th grade book club years ago.
