Lesters first-person narrative is honest and pure. Kirkus (starred review) Perfect for fans of Fish in a Tree and Wonder, this uplifting debut novel from Mandy David follows space-obsessed Lester Musselbaum as he experiences the challenges of his first days of public school: making friends, facing bullies, finding his "thing," and accidentally learning of his autism-spectrum diagnosis. Lesters first days as a fifth grader at Quarry Elementary School are not even a little bit like he thought they would bethe cafeteria is too loud for Lester's ears, there are too many kids, and then there's the bully. Lester was always home-schooled, and now hes shocked to be stuck in a school where everything just seems wrong. That's until he hears about the science fair, which goes really well for Lester! This is it. The moment where I find out for 100 percent sure that I won. But then things go a bit sideways, and Lester has to find his way back. A touching peek into the life of a sensitive autism-spectrum boy facing the everydayness of elementary school, Superstar testifies that what you can do isnt nearly as important as who you are. A lovely, heartfelt narrative about the things weve lost, and the things weve found again. Gary D. Schmidt, Newbery Honor winner for The Wednesday Wars I LOVE LESTER. Linda Urban, author of Milo Speck, Accidental Agent and A Crooked Kind of Perfect

Pickpick

Lester is on the Autism spectrum but doesn't know it, yet. He is starting public school for the first time since his mother had to find a new job. Lester learns that certain things bother him that do not bother his other classmates. Read Superstar (RF) by Mandy Davis, to learn how Lester realizes he is unique compared to his classmates and how he copes with the changes he is going through.

AshleyH Superstar is apart of the Sunshine State Young Reader book list 2019-2020.

Superstar is a great discussion starter and would be a great book for a read-aloud. Students will learn about what someone on the Autistic Spectrum thinks and feels as they are listening to Lester's perspective.

AshleyH UDL- Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships (3.2)
EL- Promote cooperation (small groups)
Discussion can also happen in small groups or partners. This might make the EL feel more comfortable since they can discuss in a small group setting.

LauraLeighn I think it‘s so cool that this book tells the story from the point of view of an autistic child. I love how You pointed out how this would be a great RA book and how you can use it to foster an open discussion with the class about the autistic spectrum 4y
DrSpalding I am not sure if this book is in our diverse family bookshelf but plan to share this with Amy! This is a wonderful story that I am sure can help students better understand children on the spectrum. This would be a valuable addition to your classroom library. 4y

47 pages in and I don't want to stop reading but I need sleep. This is going to be a great book to pair with Wonder and Rules by Cynthia Lord, I can already tell.

Laura317 I loved Wonder. Adding this based on your post! 7y
