Honouring the contributions and achievements of the Black community this month and every month. What better place to start than with the brilliant mind of James Baldwin!

The murder of 28 children in Atlanta between 1979 -1981, is used as a jumping off point to dissect race and race relations in America, as only the great James Baldwin can.

What‘s your favourite work by James Baldwin?

PurpleyPumpkin This sounds so interesting. Strangely enough, I‘ve not yet read a JB book. I must rectify that! Would this be a good book to start with? Or is there another that you‘d recommend to begin with? 1d
PurpleyPumpkin And a big welcome to Litsy!😉 1d
Treena Reads @PurpleyPumpkin A really great one but not sure it‘s an appropriate one to start with. I‘ve only read 4 of his works, so I am not sure I would be the best to advise you. However, the Guardian- my trusted source for all things book has wrote this article https://www.theguardian.com/books/article/2024/aug/02/where-to-start-with-james-... 14h

Packed with wonderful insightful discussions of racism in America.
There was a bit about integration vs. assimilation that was entirely new to me. I‘m #listeningandlearning

Recently scooped up this title from a #bookoutlet haul, and currently up early watching my recordings of the Atlanta Child Murders mini-series on Discovery ID. Enthralling and also deeply disturbing. Curious to read Baldwin's insights into the case, and the overall pulse of the city at the time! #truecrime #essays #nonfiction

BarbaraTheBibliophage I remember those murders. So frightening and heartbreaking. Had no idea Baldwin wrote about them. 6y
KT1432 @BarbaraTheBibliophage I can't imagine how scary it must have been!! I stumbled across this book and can't wait to read it. Apparently Baldwin was so interested in and troubled by the murders that he traveled back to the U.S. from Paris to interview people involved in the case. 6y

Ooooooooo Baldwin has some sting on his pen! I'm enjoying his writing, and I'm reading slowly to catch the subtlety and nuance of his prose.
