Underwater Welder | Jeff Lemire

Pressure. An underwater welder on an oilrig off the Nova Scotia coast, Jack is used to the pressures of deep-sea work. Nothing, however, could prepare him for the pressures of impending fatherhood. As Jack dives deeper and deeper, he seems to pull further and further away from his young wife and their unborn son. But then, something happens deep on the ocean floor. Jack has a strange and mind-bending encounter that will change the course of his life forever! Equal parts blue-collar character study and mind-bending science fiction epic, The Underwater Welder explores fathers and sons, birth and death, memory and truth, and the treasures we all bury deep down inside. "It's a striking evocation of the Canadian Maritimes, and a moving meditation on what haunts us and how we struggle to keep those specters at bay." - New York Times

#ReadingTheAmericas2023 #Canada ?? @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle
This was different than I'd expected, as it was touted as a Twilight Zone-esque story, & while I totally get that, to me the "weird" seemed entirely, & more convincingly, explicable as bereavement trauma & psychological processing. Either way, it was a touchingly emotional story about a man on the verge of fatherhood struggling with the death of his own father 20 years previously. 4⭐

vivastory Jeff Lemire is brilliant!! I recommend Royal City for a unique take on grief by Lemire, including great 90s music references 2y
Librarybelle Yay! It looks like this was a good pickup at the library (edited) 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory Thanks - I'll keep my eye out for his other books 😊 2y
Bookwomble @Librarybelle Yes, this was a fortuitous find for the Challenge, and a quick read. I'm still reading Pedagogy of the Oppressed for Brazil, which is amazing, but slower going as it's bursting with ideas that I keep having to stop and reflect upon. 2y
BarbaraBB I‘ve never heard of Lenore but your and @vivastory ‘s recommendation mean a lot 2y

Although I had intended not to get any more library books for a short while, Mrs B asked me to pick up a book for her, and I picked this up for me while I was in. Without intending to, I find that I'll have #Canada covered for #ReadingTheAmericas2023 That's the other 50% of North America covered, then! 😊🇨🇦

TieDyeDude Nice! I love Lemire. 2y
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude I haven't read any of his other comics, but I did enjoy the TV adaptation of Sweet Tooth, and I'm looking forward to the next series. This comic was good 😊 2y

This graphic novel by Jeff Lemire deals with a grown son facing his past and losing his father when he was young. He finds himself confronting his grief on the eve of becoming a father himself. This is a stand alone graphic novel with a lot of heart. I love that the story is all in black and white. 💚

This marks off #readvisually for #summerfun Bingo. @4thhouseontheleft @StayCurious

Another fantastic graphic novel choice. Jeff Lemire was my first favorite in this format, & I continue to be blessed by his hefty backlog (& a comic book guy who knows my weakness).
This is the story of a man coming to terms with his past on the cusp of his future. Can he do it before it‘s too late?

Another great, character-driven indie from Jeff Lemire! His art style is not to everyone's taste - his characters often look angular and gaunt - though I adjust to it about 50 pages in or so.

The Underwater Welder is a quiet story and there's not a whole lot of dialogue; however, the visual symbols/motifs are quite smart and really coalesce with the story's themes by the end.

Working on these two today. I'll have plenty of time to read this conning up week since I'll be out of work most of the week. For anyone who saw my last post then you know I was in the ER on Wednesday due to some pain on my right side. It turned out to be my appendix and I had surgery that night. Special thanks to @TricksyTails for virtually hanging out with me while I was in the ER. I'm back home now to rest and recover.

TricksyTails 🤗♥️ So happy you‘re home and recovering in some pretty rad PJs, I might add. 💀🖤😁 Looks like you‘ve got some awesome reading ahead! I love Lemire! What‘s that cute kitty cupcake thing? Wishing you a speedy recovery! Hugs!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️ 7y
JillPill @TricksyTails I love anything with sugar skulls on it! The kitty cupcake thing is a little squishy that my mom got me for Christmas. She brought down the Christmas presents when she came down to stay with me. 7y
TricksyTails Huge fan of all things sugar skulls! Aww how sweet of mom! I hope her company is making the recovery so much smoother. 🤗🤗🤗 7y
JillPill @TricksyTails she is helping so much! She's cooking up a storm and babying me like crazy 😂 7y
TricksyTails Yay! Nothing like mom‘s home cooking to make it all right in the world! ☺️♥️ 7y

Absolutely loved this one. I'm diving headfirst (little diving joke there of course) into the graphic novel genre and I would definitely recommend this as a starting point if you're looking for one with the same emotional power as a traditional novel.
