This enchanting novel tells the story of the love affair between Rose-Marie Schmidt and Roger Anstruther. A determined young woman of twenty-five, Rose-Marie is considered a spinster by the inhabitants of the small German town of Jena where she lives with her father, the Professor. To their homes comes Roger, an impoverished but well-born young Englishman who wishes to learn German: Rose-Marie and Roger fall in love. But the course of true love never did run smooth: distance, temperament and fortune divide them. We watch the ebb and flow of love between two very different people and see the witty and wonderful Rose-Marie get exactly what she wants.

LeahBergen @Chrissyreadit They are sort of “British women in the 1920s and 30s”. Is that a sort of genre? 😆 As to my house - yeah, I think my husband would say it‘s a bit of a multi-room library. 😂 And you‘re right, actually. We always say our next place will be mostly library. 7y

#VintageEdition post, #ElizabethVonArnim edition. These books from my collection are editions from 1931, 1940, 1907, 1936, 1929, and 1926 respectively. 💕

GlitteryOtters @SharonGoforth thanks! I love her books so much I had to own them...and for some reason old editions were often cheaper than newer editions of the same quality level, so of COURSE I went for the old editions where possible...! 9y
SharonGoforth @GlitteryOtters I have a few Van Arnims that are vintage, including The Jasmine Farm which has the same cover as yours 😊. I just love vintage books. They have a wonderful patina about them. 9y
