A Course In Miracles

A Course in Miracles is spiritual guide for life. The book begins; This is A Course in Miracles, it is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. "The Course" as it is commonly known, comprises of 365 lessons. It is divided into three books; "the Text," "the Workbook for Students," and "the Manual for Teachers". Dr. Helen Schucman channeled the book over a 7-year period between 1965 and 1972 whilst she was a professor of medical psychology at Columbia University in New York. She gave herself no credit for the authorship of the text and she claimed she received it as a kind of mental dictation from a voice who identified himself as Jesus. Needless to say the text has caused consternation among certain Christians who cry, "Beware of false prophets" and while it is Christian in tone, much of the writing is comparable to eastern wisdom traditions. The author speaks of the return of Jesus and states The Second Coming is the awareness of reality, not its return. Behold, my children, reality is here. It belongs to you and me and God and is perfectly satisfying to all of us. Only this awareness heals because it is the awareness of truth. The books key tenet is 'Forgiveness'. Forgiveness appears to be the answer to all of life's problems and we are informed, Let forgiveness be the substitute for fear. This is the only rule for happy dreams. It goes on to say; forgiveness recognizes what you thought your brother did to you has not occurred. It does not pardon sins and make them real. It sees there was no sin. And in that view are all your sins forgiven. What is sin, except a false idea about God's Son? Forgiveness merely sees its falsity, and therefore lets it go. What then is free to take its place is now the Will of God. Sin, we are told is non-existent; it is merely an illusion constructed by the ego and the world we see around us is an illusion constructed by our thoughts. The author tells us, The world is false perception. It is born of error, and it has not left its source. It will remain no longer than the thought which gave it birth is cherished. The only thing that is real is created by God, there is nothing else and everything we think and feel is real in the physical world is nothing but an illusion. What God did not create does not exist. And everything that does exist exists as He created it. The world you see has nothing to do with reality. It is of your own making, and it does not exist. Love is everything; perfect love is the goal for all of us and we simply have to let it in; the search for love is but the honest searching out of everything that interferes with love. Love is the opposite of judgement and love really does conquer all. When the original text was written down, personal messages to the scribes were taken out and it was complied into a workable coherent book. In 1972 the book was sent to Hugh Lynne Cayce, son of the famous American psychic and medical intuitive, Edgar Cayce. Cayce assisted by distributing the text albeit only to a few people. In 1975 a later version of the text was published by "The Foundation for Inner Peace." More than a million copies were sold around the world and the book was a huge commercial success.

On day 68 of a year-long guided study of the text of this newest (10 years in the making) and fantastic edition of the Course. One of today's quotes that bears repeating: "Egos can clash in any situation, but souls cannot clash at all."

kspenmoll How had it been for you? I did this in my late 20's- wonder what it would be like now with years of living? 7y
Suet624 @kspenmoll Same here. I have to say this new revised version is fantastic. It provides footnotes and cameos and explains a lot. The study group can be found at www.emilybennington.com/Course companions if you're interested. The new version was 10 years in the making and inserts notes and material that had been removed either prior to the first publication or later. I've really enjoyed it. 7y
kspenmoll Thanks for info. 😊 7y

I attend a weekly Book Club meeting for this esoteric book. We are reading it together in its entirety, taking turns reading paragraph by paragraph and then discussing. We have been meeting for three years and have only made it to pg. 319. The text ends on pg. 669. I don't read ahead, just go with the flow! 😀 One day! And the Angel spray was a gift from my sister! #funfridayphoto

Alfoster Wow! You have a lot of patience!😀 8y
DivineDiana @Alfoster ? It is a philosophical book and we have lots of discussion of our interpretations. It's not like finding out "who done it" ! ? 8y
Alfoster Sounds like a great way to read it!😍 8y

Suet624 I've dipped in and out of this book for 30+ years. It sits by my bed. Have done a number of study groups. It's wonderful that you have studied it with others in such a slow and thoughtful manner. 8y
DivineDiana @sue624 How interesting! The slow, methodical process works for me. 8y
