The Princess and the Warrior
The Princess and the Warrior: A Tale of Two Volcanoes | Duncan Tonatiuh
12 posts | 15 read | 1 to read
Award-winning author Duncan Tonatiuh reimagines one of Mexico’s cherished legends. Princess Izta had many wealthy suitors but dismissed them all. When a mere warrior, Popoca, promised to be true to her and stay always by her side, Izta fell in love. The emperor promised Popoca if he could defeat their enemy Jaguar Claw, then Popoca and Izta could wed. When Popoca was near to defeating Jaguar Claw, his opponent sent a messenger to Izta saying Popoca was dead. Izta fell into a deep sleep and, upon his return, even Popoca could not wake her. As promised Popoca stayed by her side. So two volcanoes were formed: Iztaccíhuatl, who continues to sleep, and Popocatépetl, who spews ash and smoke, trying to wake his love.

I promise that I will love you for who you are. I will stay by your side no matter what, as long as tonatiuh rises, as long as the cenzontle bird sings.

Traditional. This is a wonderful book about a princess and her steadfast warrior. The princess always loved spending time with her people and teaching them poetry. She receives many gifts from suitors wanting to change who she was and offer her a life of luxury away from her people. Until one day a great warrior came along and saw her for the amazing person that she was. All in all a beautiful yet sad story about a princess and her warrior.

This book was published in 2016 and is a Pura Belpré Honor book. It is the story of the creation of mountains after a love story similar to Romeo and Juliet‘s occurs. It is an interesting take on love and shows the creation of the land. I really really like it. It also includes a glossary that refers to the language of Nahuatl.

#SeptemberDanes Day 23: Given the preponderance of contemporary realistic stories that are out there, it is rare that ancient legends and folktales are rendered with such a modern and relatable vibe to it. At its very core, The Princess and the #WarriorWorrier is a love story, similar to most legends. My full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-eh3

"The Princess and the Warrior: A tale of two Volcanoes" by Duncan Tonatiuh. Princess Izta isn't to keen on getting married. Every suitor who has come to ask for her hand, no matter their wealth has been turned down. Until Princess Izta meets Popoca. Popoca promises the Princess the he will never leave her side until death do they part. The Princess instantly falls in love with Popoca. The Emperor tells Popoca, in order to marry the Princess

Dbenford he must first defeat their enemy Jaguar Claw but lies reached the Princess from their enemy and the Princess is stricken with grief. What will happen to the Princess? What were the lies? You must read to find out. This book would be great for these strategies AS, S and RA in the classroom. The link that I found was https://www.teachingbooks.net/to.cgi?a=1&tid=51215. The UDL and ELL strategy I chose was 3.2 (Highlight patterns, critical features 7y
Dbenford big ideas and relationships) and 7 (Show students how to use graphic organizers like semantic mapping and imaging). #UCFLAE3414F17 7y
jvinas2 I remember reading this tale when I was younger; it's so cool to see that it has been transformed into a picture book! Great post about the tale as well! 7y

When the princess and the warrior fall in love fate has other plans.
Duncan Tonatiuh's illustrations, reminiscent of Aztec artistry, are perfectly suited to the legend of the two volcanoes near Mexico City, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
This book includes an author's note about the legend, a glossary of Nahuatl words, pronunciations used in the story, and a bibliography.
Great read for gradeschoolers.
