A moment of peace in the forest 🥰 reading an Epictetus edition from the Athens airport, with the Greek parallel to the English translation.

Just starting A Manual for Living, also called Enchiridion (or Manuel d‘Épictète in French). I found it second-hand last month and I really want to read more pre-modern classics. It‘s looking like the book is 10% Epictetus, 90% introduction and commentary. Looking forward to this.

This is a "modern interpretation" of Epictetus' teachings, rather than a word for word translation. It's easy-to-read and chock-a-block with great advice and sage wisdom. I don't doubt that I will read it again in the future.

Short but sweet. It has some basic ideas of Stoicism and some real great nuggets of wisdom here.

bookandcat I've never been to Greece but I'd love to go sometime, I want to see Athens and also the islands! You picked a cool era too - what made you pick that time? 7y
SilversReviews Love the graphic. I'll submit mine tomorrow. (edited) 7y
CherryPie @bookandcat I'm going to chat up a historian, Arrian of Nicomedia, when I get to 125. Kind of cool to think about ancient historians. 7y
bookandcat @CherryPie that's awesome! I'd love to pick their brains too! 7y

This is a nice modern interpretation of Epictetus' classic writings. It provides some simple effective advice for rolling with the trials and tribulations of life while living the good life.

...about focusing on the things within your control and ignoring everything else. "...it is not that which has happened that afflicts this man...but it is the opinion about this thing which afflicts the man." Unfortunately, Epictetus, a stoic philosopher (born a slave - then freed - ca. 50 AD in present day Pamukkale, Turkey), wrote no works of his own. His Discourses and Enchiridion were recorded by his student Arrian. #Stoicism

#inspiring #photoadaynov16 a book of philosophy written by a ex slave with a very poor outlook on human nature inspiring? Well I think so. Epictetus' central message is that you cannot control the vagaries of the world, all you can control is the way you react to what the world offers up. So all we can do is decide what values matter and learn to live by these values. Not self help material but realistic and honest, and I find this inspiring.

Smrloomis Interesting. Thanks for posting. 8y
Marchpane Realistic and down to earth is way more inspiring than the woo-woo stuff, I reckon. 8y

Don't just say you have read books. Show that through them you have learned to think better, to be a more discriminating and reflective person. Books are the training weights of the mind. They are very helpful, but it would be a bad mistake to suppose that one has made progress simply by having internalized their contents.

People don't have the power to hurt you ... If someone irritates you, it is only your own response that is irritating you. Therefore, when anyone seems to be provoking you, remember that it is only your judgment of the incident that provokes you.
