SEANCE INFERNALE
SEANCE INFERNALE | Jonathan Skariton
5 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
An extraordinary debut novel--dark, fast-paced, thrilling--set in contemporary and nineteenth-century Europe, the United States, and Scotland, involving the true inventor of moving pictures; his lost film, Seance Infernale, made in Edinburgh in 1888; and a shocking series of crimes terrorizing the city in present time. A riveting story of suspense; a compelling tale of adventure. The time: 2002. Alex Whitman, a movie memorabilia dealer who can find anything, is hired by an eccentric film collector to locate what could be the first film ever made, Seance Infernale. Its creator, Augustin Sekuler, is considered by those who know about movies to be the true inventor of motion pictures--not the Lumiere brothers; or Thomas Edison. In 1890, Sekular had boarded a train from Dijon, headed to Paris, days before he was to present to the world his greatest new invention, the first of its kind--a moving picture machine. Sekuler never arrived at Gare de Lyon station. He and his moving picture machine vanished, never to be heard from again. When Alex Whitman tracks down what might be fragments of Sekuler's famously lost film, questions are raised--about Sekuler, about what happened to him and to his invention, and about the film itself. And the stakes become ratcheted up as the film's riddles lead to a darker, far more dangerous mystery."

Bailedbailed

It isn‘t often that I bail on a mystery but, although I (barely) made it past the description of a cat being burned alive, the story was too fragmented to hold my interest; coupled with an incredibly dense writing style I bailed at p. 124.

The author “works as a cognitive neuroscientist for the largest fragrance manufacturer in the world”. Should have stuck to his day job.

Too bad, the early film making details were interesting.

Pickpick

Finally finished this - very densely packed read but fully of Film history, ancient evil, child kidnapping, a father's search, codes leading throughout Edinburgh's underground. An odd book to put into any category but the blurb is "a gothic nightmare, a love letter to the dawn of cinema, to the ghost-ridden city of Edinburgh, and to the golden age of pulp fiction" starts slow but picks up- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

vivastory @Moray_Reads have you read this? I recently picked it up. Sounds like a cross between White Tears & Night Film. 7y
Moray_Reads @vivastory I've never heard of it! Sounds fascinating and I struggle to resist an Edinburgh setting. Stacked 7y
batsy This sounds intriguing! 7y
vivastory @batsy you can convince me to read almost anything if you attach the description, "Gothic nightmare" ?? 7y
batsy @vivastory Right? ? Also "film history, ancient evil"... Yes, please! 7y

#LibraryHoldList This looks so interesting- searching for the first bit of film is the basic premise- we'll see how that plays out! #TbrList
