A woman sets out on a cross-country road trip, unknowingly tracing in reverse the path her mother traveled thirty years before. "Tender, touching, original, and rich with delicious period detail of Hollywood's heyday--buckle up, because you'll definitely want to go on a road trip after reading this delightful book!"--Hazel Gaynor, New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Who Came Home In the 1950s, movie star Louise Wilde is caught between an unfulfilling acting career and a shaky marriage when she receives an out-of-the-blue phone call: She has inherited the estate of Florence "Florrie" Daniels, a Hollywood screenwriter she barely recalls meeting. Among Florrie's possessions are several unproduced screenplays, personal journals, and--inexplicably--old photographs of Louise's mother, Ethel. On an impulse, Louise leaves a film shoot in Las Vegas and sets off for her father's house on the East Coast, hoping for answers about the curious inheritance and, perhaps, about her own troubled marriage. Nearly thirty years earlier, Florrie takes off on an adventure of her own, driving her Model T westward from New Jersey in pursuit of broader horizons. She has the promise of a Hollywood job and, in the passenger seat, Ethel, her best friend since childhood. Florrie will do anything for Ethel, who is desperate to reach Nevada in time to reconcile with her husband and reunite with her daughter. Ethel fears the loss of her marriage; Florrie, with long-held secrets confided only in her journal, fears its survival. In parallel tales, the three women--Louise, Florrie, Ethel--discover that not all journeys follow a map. As they rediscover their carefree selves on the road, they learn that sometimes the paths we follow are shaped more by our traveling companions than by our destinations.

LOVED THIS BOOK! Almost like a scrapbook, the story is told through a narrative, snippets of a travel log, lists and notes, excerpts of a screenplay, court records, and more. It‘s two distinct stories combined into one and linked by a mother and daughter and their separate but similar journeys, both literal and figurative. Just a wonderfully bittersweet and touching novel. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

#SetInFaveEra! The Fabulous Fifties! 🎙🎶🎵📻📺

I've read 4 of these so far. Any other suggestions for books set in the 1950s?

#FallIntoBooks

BookBabe The Fifties weren't perfect, but for me there's much to appreciate: Elvis, rock'n'roll, sock hops, doo wop, dancing to the jukebox, the clothes, the cars, the colors, the hairstyles, going steady and wearing his ring around your neck (or his pin or ID bracelet), drive-ins, an era of surplus rather than deprivation...I could go on and on! ❤️ 7y
bookish.escape I love anything that has to do with the 50's too!! I always thought I was born in the wrong generation lol!! 7y
Cortg I read both Circle of Friends and The Reader that I believe we're set on the 50's and I have Snow Falling on Cedar that is in my TBR list. ❤️ 7y

#TBRtemptation post 4! 1950s Hollywood, Louise has an unfulfilling acting career and a shaky marriage. She receives notice that she's inherited the Florida estate of Florence, a former screenwriter who has a connection with her mom, Ethel. Louise heads East for answers. 30 years earlier, Florence & Ethel head West in their Model T from New Jersey for broader horizons in Las Vegas & LA. 3 women, 3 parallel tales. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Really good! I didn't know much about it going in - just that it's historical fiction and involved Hollywood - and I'm glad that's all I knew because if I had known anything about its structure I would have passed on it. It has 3 things I usually don't like or am just tired of: two timelines, present tense, and one story is told through diary entries. Somehow this all worked for me and I enjoyed both stories. Expected publication 8/8/17.

DarcysMom Looks good. I just requested it. 😁 7y

Two road trips tied together blend into a predictable but satisfyingly heartwarming read! And while it isn't exactly #SetInTheSummer, it still has a summer-fun feel with its Hollywood angle and multi-faceted story!
