Personality Types
Personality Types: Using the Enneagram for Self-Discovery | Don Richard Riso, Russ Hudson
15 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
The Enneagram is an extraordinary framework for understanding more about ourselves. No matter from which point of view we approach it, we discover fresh conjunctions of new and old ideas." So writes Don Riso in this expanded edition of his classic interpretation of the Enneagram, the ancient psychological system used to understand the human personality. In addition to updating the descriptions of the nine personality types, Personality Types, Revised greatly expands the accompanying guidelines and, for the first time, uncovers the Core Dynamics, or Levels of Development, within each type. This skeletal system provides far more information about the inner tension and movements of the nine personalities than has previously been published. This increased specificity will allow therapists, social workers, personnel managers, students of the Enneagram, and general readers alike to use it with much greater precision as they unlock the secrets of self-understanding, and thus self-transformation.

If you want an in depth look at the enneagram, this is your book. Very well written. A little academic, but still comprehendable for a layperson.

merelybookish Hey! I forgot to respond to your comment the other day! Thanks for the suggestions. I do need to sit down with a proper.book and puzzle it out. I'm either a 5 or a 9 which, it turns out, are often mistaken for each other. Sometimes I'm convinced I'm one,.then other days I'm convinced I'm the other. 6y

Fascinating book. I did find it a little long-winded at times. So I skimmed over the parts that I didn't feel applied to me or my family. But, all the same, it's a fantastic reference book and it's insights are truly spot on. I'll probably come back to it many times

It's almost creepy seeing some of the people I love most dearly described this thoroughly and accurately.

Sixes make their internal stability dependent on the stability of their external environment: in other words, as long as everything in their lives is running reasonably well, they feel secure and able to cope with things. As soon as problems or areas of uncertainty arise, however, they are quickly thrown into a storm of confusion and emotional reactions.

Um. Wow. 🙋

Alright Litsy, so based off this, what's your best guess for your Enneagram number? Or if you know yours already, what is it? I'm curious! I'm a 1, or for those of you who know Enneagram 1w2 :)

saresmoore My husband says I'm a 15 because I exhibit characteristics of both 1 & 5! Personally, I identify as 5w4. I loved The Road Back to You, by the way! 8y
maximoffs @saresmoore I'm so glad you enjoyed it! One of my closest friends is a 5w6! 8y
drokka I'm a 5w2 8y

maximoffs @drokka wait how? Your wing can only be one of the numbers on the side of your main number! 8y
Caterina I love the Enneagram! I'm a 1w2 also!! 😄 I've done an excellent job working on my 9 wing in recent years though. 😃 8y
mom2bugnbee Okay, so I don't know this book, but I'm gleaning from comments that the first number is your dominant one, & then the "w" is one side or the other of your dominant that fits you? I'm definitely a 9, & if my thoughts are correct, then I'm a 9w8. Am I doing this right? ? 8y
maximoffs @Caterina yay for working on w9!! I am doing that a lot these days. @mom2bugnbee somewhat yes! Your number is your number, and then you have a "wing" which is one of the numbers to the side whose traits you also have. A 1w9 operates differently than a 1w2 so to say. But that's the jist! This is the Enneagram, it's really cool! 8y
mom2bugnbee Gonna stack this. I love personality stuff like this & I've never heard of this method. 8y
emilyesears I think the last time I took a test I was a 9. But I don't think it was a legit test, just some internet quiz. 8y
maximoffs @mom2bugnbee this one might be a little heavy to start with! Try "The Road Back to You" if you're okay with a bit of a Christian perspective, or 8y
maximoffs @emilyesears internet quizzes are super unreliable when it comes to the Enneagram! The best way is to listen to people talk about the numbers, or read about them. But you have to read about all of them 8y
Karkar I am a 4 but I cannot remember what my second one is...my aunt is very into Enneagram. She goes to conferences and everything. It gave me great insight as to why my Grandmother was the way she was. 8y
maximoffs @Karkar interesting! But I've found the same thing with people I didn't really understand, when I figure out what their number is, I can make a lot of sense of it 8y
kelseynicburke Based on those descriptions I am both a 4 and a 9 8y
maximoffs @kelseynicburke interesting combo! 8y
Erinxx90 A dangerous 2 an 6 mix ... manipulation is not always a negative 8y
MyNamesParadise I'm 2, 4, 5, and 6.....dang I knew I had multiple personalities 😜 8y
anrobe I‘m a 9 in every way! 7y
