From the co-author of Black Mass comes a gripping YA novel inspired by the true story of a young man's false imprisonment for murder and those who fought to free him. On a hot summer night in the late 1980s, in the Boston neighborhood of Roxbury, a twelve-year-old African-American girl was sitting on a mailbox talking with her friends when she became the innocent victim of gang-related gunfire. Amid public outcry, an immediate manhunt was on to catch the murderer, and a young African-American man was quickly apprehended, charged, and wrongly convicted of the crime. Dick Lehr, a former reporter for the Boston Globes famous Spotlight Team who investigated this case for the newspaper, now turns the story into Trell, a page-turning novel about the daughter of an imprisoned man who persuades a reporter and a lawyer to help her prove her fathers innocence. What pieces of evidence might have been overlooked? Can they manage to get to the truth before a dangerous character from the neighborhood gets to them?

So, while I love a good bookstore browse, I have a hard time picking up a book and going with it on a whim. I tend to be more of a research before-hand and then only buy books that I know are on my Goodreads TBR list. However, I came across these books at a lovely bookstore yesterday and all looked intriguing. I haven‘t done my research yet, but wanted to throw this out to the bookish void. What say you, friends? Did I leave any gems on the rack?

The cat is refusing to let me get up, to the point of allowing me to rest books on him. Trell is good so far — it‘s about a girl doing everything she can to help her father, who was wrongfully convicted of murder.

Pickpick

You really get a feel for why some people are afraid of cops. I couldn't believe that this story was based off of a real live event. I had to Google it afterwards. Very heart breaking but also very interesting.
