The Dying Detective
The Dying Detective: A Mystery | Leif GW Persson
6 posts | 4 read | 12 to read
LARS MARTIN JOHANSSON is a living legend. Cunning and perceptive, always one step ahead, he was known in the National Criminal Police as the man who could see around corners. But now Johansson is retired, living in the country, his police days behind him. Or so he thinks. After suffering a stroke, Johansson finds himself in the hospital. Tests show heart problems as well. And the only thing that can save him from despair is his doctors mention of an unsolved murder case from years before. The victim: an innocent nine-year-old girl. Johansson is determined to solve the case, no matter his condition. With the help of his assistant, Matilda, an amateur detective, and Max, an orphan with a personal stake in the case, he launches an informal investigation from his hospital bed. Racing against time, he uncovers a web of connections that links sex tourism to a dead opera singer and a self-made millionaire. And as Johansson draws closer to solving the crime, he finds that he will have to confront not just a mystery but his own mortality as well.

Really enjoyed this mystery about a retired (and in ill health) detective trying to solve a cold case while he is still able to. Loved the main character and his unorthodox crew of assistants.

After we moved here, first thing I noticed? No B&N and no local bookstores. Except BAM!, and I was never a member because we didn't have one where I lived. Guess who is now not only a member, but just earned a $10 gift card and $100 worth of coupons? That's right. This Lady. I found a hardback of The Diabolic for $3.97, could not say no to these cozy mysteries, and look at The Dying Detective. Perfect motivation to finish my Library ❤️ #BookHaul

I'm giving this Swedish crime novel a pick for the plot. A well-crafted mystery w/ characters I found easy to root for. The #audiobook read by Erik Davies was nicely done—good accent, nice pacing—although there was a brief section w/ breathing noises. My issue? The translator was not great w/ idioms, something I've not noticed often in books in translation. If the characters & story hadn't grabbed me, the translation would have driven me nuts

Started this Scandinavian crime novel on #audiobook this morning and just can't stop listening. Every second I've had I've been hearing the story of how a retired detective stews over a cold case murder while in the hospital recovering from a stroke. It's totally grabbed my attention.
