In a broad departure from his Chet and Bernie series, Quinn presents a searing portrait of a woman with PTSD. LeAnne was injured serving in Afghanistan and is now hospitalized to recover. She eventually strikes out on her own and meets a dog along the way. She really never stops struggling and it is painful to watch. I think these stories are so important to tell and witness, but it‘s not an easy read.

The synopsis doesn‘t match the plot. It‘s about a woman with severe PTSD trying to find herself and her place in the world after a disfiguring accident. However, the dog doesn‘t show up until the middle and her roommate‘s daughter barely makes a dent in the story at all. Not bad, but the description is a bit misleading.

I needed a "Q" book for my #AtoZ challenge, picked this up, and so glad I did. A compelling story about a wounded veteran trying to find her way back to normal - whatever her new normal will become. The story switches between the present and flashbacks - sometimes it was hard to pick up the change quickly and I had to reread a paragraph or two but that was a very small inconvenience in what was a great read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Very different from the Chet and Bernie stories, but the same strength of creating compelling characters that I've come to expect from Spencer Quinn. The jacket description is a little misleading as the dog and missing child parts are only in about half the book, but enjoyable nonetheless.

I pre-ordered this, but I've been reluctant to start it because it's not Chet and Bernie--but it is Spencer Quinn, so it has to be good, right?

The MC, LeAnne Hogan, is a soldier back from Afghanistan with both physical scars from a military op gone wrong and the emotional scars of PSTD, and the dog that works its way into her life has its own scars.💜

What Jennifer thought was going to be the story of a wounded warrior and a dog finding a missing child was not that at all.

Not what I was expecting--this book's as much a character study of physically damaged, PSTD-suffering military Sergeant LeAnne Hogan as it is a mystery & most of the 1st half is spent setting up the character but LeAnne hooked me-I wanted to see what she did next, then the dog arrived & the mystery kicked in. Have officially ended the work portion of the day & I'm determined to do no work tomorrow on the holiday. Celebrating with an afternoon snack of garlic hummus & root veggie chips & some more of this #ARC that I'm reviewing for a blog book tour later in the week. About 1/3 of the way in & not to the promised mystery or the dog yet, but the character set up is interesting & Stephen King liked it so I'm optimistic some suspense will kick in soon.👍📚

I'm a Quinn fan-but I didn't think he had this in him. Funny mysteries with dogs? Sure, he's great at those. But sensitive explorations of veterans dealing with the aftermath of life-altering injuries? I wouldn't have guessed it. But man . . . he really got this flawed character, this incredibly human character, right.

This is Spencer Quinn operating on a whole new level with a character we need more like -- such a great read.
